The 1986 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe Registry!

The VIN numbers listed below are of suspected or known "replica" 86 Aerocoupes. Due to discrepancies, these cars are suspected of or known to be conversions from what were normal notchback SSs by other than Cars & Concepts Inc. and are not considered by this Registry as part of the original 200 produced in 1986.

All 1986 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupes had a White exterior and Burgundy interior combination. There are some 86 Aeros that are registered that have aftermarket paint jobs. All have been confirmed to have been White exterior from the factory.

Here are some other facts that we either know, or suspect about the 1986 Aerocoupe:

• There were only 200 1986 Monte Carlo Aerocoupes built.
• All 1986 Aerocoupes were built at the Arlington, TX plant. All 1987 Aerocoupes were built at the Pontiac, MI plant.
• All 1986 Aerocoupes left the assembly line as standard Monte Carlo (notchback) SSs, and were sent to an outside vendor (Cars & Concepts, Inc. Brighton, MI) for the Aerocoupe modification (option).
• The 1986 Aerocoupe RPO Option code was B5T. The Aerocoupe RPO Code changed in 1987 to Z16. There were NO 1988 Aerocoupes made.
• The 86 Aerocoupe's trunk was held aloft by a single gas strut on the driver's side of the trunk, which connected between the trunk lid and trunk floor. This differs from the '87 Aeros, which use two gas struts which connect between the trunk lid and top of the trunk lip.
• There is a black plastic strip that runs along the bottom edge of the rear glass that is not present on the 1987 Aerocoupe. There have been reports that the early version '86 Aeros use just one plastic strip, while later versions use three separate plastic sections across the bottom of the glass.
• We're gathering option data to see just how identical these '86 Aeros are. They appear to be carbon copies of one another, all White exterior, Maroon interior with identical options.
• The P.E.P. (Product Evaluation Purpose) car listed above was most likely used by GM for magazine test drive demos. It's one of 5 early production 86 Aerocoupes that were sent to GM Engineering.
• Interestingly.. we've had four reports from '86 Aeros of Build Sheets being found under the rear seats that were FOR A DIFFERENT 86 AERO VIN NUMBER! Subsequent searching found correct VIN build sheets under the passenger bucket seat. Most likely, Car's & Concepts, while performing several Aero conversions at the same time, placed the wrong rear seats back in the completed conversions. This seems to be the most likely explaination.

• The 1986 Aerocoupe had a 19 week production run, with 10 produced each week with the exception of the first week, in which 20 were produced.
• Five of the first 20 1986 Aerocoupes were sent to GM's Engineering department and appeared at most major speedways.
• The 1986 Aerocoupes were distributed to the following dealership zones:
  • Jacksonville, Quantity: 70
  • Charlotte, Quantity: 70
  • Atlanta, Quantity: 30
  • Birmingham, Quantity: 30
• Distribution to the dealership zones was based on:
  • Retail Monte Carlo sales as % to Region 1985 YTD
  • Number of major NASCAR speedway races in zone (January - July)

• Here is the list of RPO codes that is believe to be identical with ALL 1986 Monte Carlo Aerocoupes. NONE of the 1986 Aerocoupes came with a Limited Slip (Posi) differential (RPO Code G80)!! Very interesting.

• In 1993, the National Monte Carlo Owner's Association (NMCOA) raffled off an 86 Aerocoupe. 1000 tickets were sold for $30 each. For each ticket, one received an 8x10 picture of the Aerocoupe.
