Paul, I don't know much about servers or what exceeding resources means in the world of cyberspace. I know you have had a long standing policy of not accepting advertising on this site. Is there any benefit of throwing in the towel on the non-profit status, sleep loss and cash flow situation you are in and accepting advertising to help defray costs and perhaps have a more reliable server? Will the membership accept screens opening with pop-up banners? Will taking a poll help test the waters? Are there tax benefits to running and owning a website? Again thanks for providing many years of education and entertainment to benefit the dedication and preservation of our unique automobiles.

Speaking for myself i would rather pay a monthly fee to access this site then to have pop ups everytime i open a page however i think there are some ways of generating income that may work.

Here is some ideas i have.

1. Allow a storefront type setup in the vendors section only and charge the vendors a monthly fee. They can list their current specials and link directly to their own webpage.

2. Many sites get paid per hit on certain pages. There is a resource page here with hundreds of vendors listed. If these vendors were willing to pay some money per hit that comes from here then if everytime we logged in we could take 30 seconds to go to a few of their pages and generate income for this site.
I am not sure of the lagistics of this but many sites do it so it must work!

3. Yahoo has sponsor listings that are always on top of a search and they get paid for that. If a vendor here wants more exposure they could pay for always having a top listing or a larger size or different color text to make them stand out from the others.

4. Utilize the portal page for advertising. If a vendor was allowed to have an ad that takes up 1/4 of the portal page in full color for advertising their specials, products or just their site that should be worth something. Only allow 1 vendor per month so it won't turn into a long bilboard. Summit & Jegs might fight over this spot if givin the chance!

5. The site displayes the monte on the month at the top of each page. Why not have that picture alternate with a vendor ad.

These are just some suggestions and keep in mind it should only take one or two of these to generate enough income to maintain the site and allow for future growth.

I could be way off base here but i think some of these could work without making the site to commercial.

Keep in mind that if all the active members donated $20 per year then there would be no need for any of these!
Just my

Thanks for all the hard work and dedication Paul! I am in the IT field, and too familier with the hassles (though, I wish I got this kind of praise when I did upgrades and cutovers! \:P )

As for funding... I absolutely hate (Hate!! HATE!!) popups. (Did I mention that I hate popups?) IMO, they're not only annoying, but they "cheapen" the feel of a sight. I understand that they can become a necessity, but should definately be a last resort. I highly doubt this group will let it get that far though.

On the other hand, banners are no issue for me. The two bigger forums I visit, Fullsizechevy and AVSForum, both use banners extensively, and I honestly don't even notice them (it's half a turn on the ol' mouse scroll wheel). Carefully placed, they should blend right in (i.e. Up top as suggested, or the space below the shout box is unused on my screen). I'd of course prefer that the site remain "pristine" and will be sending in my contribution to help the "cause".

Want to raise some money for the site? How about to be able to post in the parts for sale or SS for sale section you have to buy a subscription to the forum for $1 a month or something like that, something small but with as many people as post in there a buck a piece would not be much but would add up. And posting a car in the for sale section would be $3. The forums could be set up to have moderator approval only for the posts and if someone wants the parts or car for sale they would have to PM the member.
