Hi all.. I just got done upgrading the board again to the latest maintenance release. Again, there shouldn't be any changes in this version that help with the speed. I have done some research on the subject though, and have affected some changes that will hopefully help. First.. here is a quote from the Message Board developer regarding Netscape:

Quote:
There are a few issues - mainly that Netscape takes forever and a day to render the nested tables that UBB now uses to display posts.
Netscape really does lock up, sometimes for an extended period of time - but it DOES render the page eventually.

There are a handful of solutions. The easiest is to use a low number of posts per page in a thread, and a low number of threads per forum. This results in smaller tables, thus less Netscape rendering time.

The prefered solution would be to encourage the users to use another browser.

I have taken his suggestion and reduced the number of threads displayed per forum page from 40 down to 25. I have also reduced the number of posts displayed per thread page fom 40 down to 25. In addition, the default number of days worth of displayed history is now 2 days (down from 5 days). Hopefully all of these changes will add up to some improved performance.

Also note, that the new code that was installed a few weeks back now uses a cache on the server to speed up performance. Every time I upgrade the code (as I just did), I have to clear that cache.. so there will be a temporary reduction in performance as that cache comes back up to full force. It should be back to its quickest access after a day or so.

It appears there is not much more I can do from the software end to improve performance. I am in discussion with our host to get more RAM installed on the server (which I would pay for from site funds).

If you are using Netscape to view the board and are experiencing slow performance, make sure your preference in your board profile is set to 2 days. Other than that, my only other suggestion is the same as the Board developer's: Switch to Internet Explorer. \:\(

Please report any bugs or quirks. Thanks \:\)

Hey Paul there really hasn't been a problem with the speed of the board for quite some time now.. it was just like the first 3-5 days after you upgraded originally.. it would drag horribly and many times just seem like it was at a stand still and that is with I.E. now the boad seems to work as good as ever.. opens fine and and everything and I'm sure mostely everyone will agree that it appears to be back to normal and it dosn't need more improvement

just want to say good job Paul on everything

It's not that slow now.. when it was first changed over it was go cook yourself a 4 course meal waiting for the page to open.. it just being slower than some other pages means it's a high traffic site whhich means that MonteCarloSS.com is going strong!
