I've just upgraded the message board software to the latest version available. We haven't gone through an upgrade in awhile because the site has been very stable and the new features up until this latest version haven't been worth the upgrade. With this upgrade, we have some neat new features to play with:
- Users may now subscribe to topics when replying. - Unsubscription links are included in all topic subscription emails. - Updated the My Profile page layout. New links have been added to your own post history and list of subscribed topics. - New profile edit confirmation screen allows users to see a preview of their signatures and public profile information. - Multiple forums may be searched at once (a multiple select box is used instead of a drop-down menu), and categories may be searched. - A new Quick Reply box has been added to the bottom of each topic. Admins or users may choose to hide the box. This saves one page view every time it is used, and saves two if you have the iframe post review feature turned on. - New user preferences to check (or uncheck) the "Show Signature" or "Disable Graemlins in this post" boxes on the posting forms by default. - New "Remember Me" box on the login form (checked by default) allows users to optionally be logged out at the end of their browser sessions. - Hack: Quick Quote, allows you to quickly transfer a user's post text to the quick reply box at the bottom of the page. Please use this feature with common sence. Edit out text from the quote that you don't need. I may disable this feature if it is abused (needless quoting of text). - Hack: Automatic long URL truncation to prevent display quirks. Makes viewing easier.
In addition, there are some new hacks that I will be adding as soon as this version is deemed stable:
- AIM pop-up link off of a user's post if that user has an AOL IM id listed in their profile. - Advanced text font manipulation allowing users to change the color, font and size of the text in their posts. - Category Minimizing, allowing you to colapse any number of categories for easier viewing. - Message Board statistics - Chat gateway (currently disabled, will re-hack and enable soon). - Board Album (currently disabled, will re-hack and enable soon).
Please report any weird quirks or errors that you may encounter. Copy / Paste errors to an email to me.
I haven't finished looking in all of the different aspects of this software yet. I encourage you to poke around, look in your profile and find the new features available.

Yeah, I was forced into that "quick quote" image quickly last night. I too don't like the color scheme. It's on my to-do list to hunt up a better representation. By the way.. I highlighted it above, but want to make mention of it again. Probably one of the most requested features out there is the ability to subscribe to an email notification of a thread you didn't start. Up until now, as a thread starter, you had the option to be notified whenever someone replied in the thread. But people replying didn't have that option. Now, members replying to a post can opt to be notified when further replies come in. In addition, there is a "subscription list" in your profile that will show you all of the threads you are subscribed to.. with the ability to turn off that subscription for each thread. Enjoy

Sounds like a bunch of neat new features. I've noticed one thing though: Originally posted by Z65_Paul: ... Multiple forums may be searched at once (a multiple select box is used instead of a drop-down menu), and categories may be searched ... I really like the idea of selecting specific multiple forums that you want to search so I had to check it out right away - but I just tried it and it's still a drop down menu. You can select categories as stated, but there is no multiple select box.

You should be able to select multiple forums now. It's not inherently obvious how to do this though. Select a forum, then with your control key pressed, select additional forum(s) to search.

Very nice feature - you don't have to wait to search every forum or so them all seperately when searching now

Regarding the Album and Chat.. I addressed that in my original post up there. Both of those features are currently disabled. I need to reinstall the hacks (manual software modifications) to re-enable them. I wanted to make sure this basic set of upgrades / features is working fine before adding the elaborate software changes required for the album and chat.
Album should be relatively easy to re-implement. It should re-appear later tonight.

I like the revisions! The instant gremlins in the quick reply is slick! Don't have to edit anymore.
