A while back, I tore out my clutch setup and re-designed it with the hopes of reducing pedal effort and making the car more comfortable to drive. The results were surprisingly good, and now I am producing the setup for the more popular F-body hydraulics. I have personally driven and have heard from a few people that the traditional setup is a bit too stiff.

Currently, the setup only really supports the dual diaphragm booster. I am working on modifying the setup for the single diaphragm booster, and there has been a successful and simple work-around for a single diaphragm in the mean time. For more details, visit the website above.

I offered up my car (and left knee) to be a test mule for the SSM clutch pedal and I want to thank Bernie for coming up with this idea. I LOVE it!!

I've been driving around with it now since last Saturday and it just makes the car so much nicer to drive...especially in traffic and at stop lights.

I promise to post up some pics and maybe a video soon trying to show the effort level needed to depress the clutch and the engagement point in my setup.

what year f body pedal are you modifying? my pedal feels like a honda pedal lol with the hydraulic ram bearing. like no effort at all to push the pedal. just something to think about.

i use the 84 camaro master or 4th generation camaro. i strongly recomend the ram bearing very nice feel.i used the camaro pedal with the stock monte pedal braket. nice clean setup .i dont even feel the clutch release lol cause its so smooth.i will post some pics

The mechanical advantage still is what it is. Theres nothing magic about that bearing. It has a cross sectional area just like the master and the ratio of the two is your mechanical advantage. If it's so high to make a stiff clutch feel like a honda, it wont release far enough. Maybe you just have a soft pressure plate to begin with? I assume we are talking about your 4 speed? My setup uses kinematics to increase the mechanical advantage as spring pressure increases. If your pedal is satisfactory, then you dont need to make a change; but I dont think that throwout will cure the heavy T56 pedal and certainly not for the LT1 T56.

Besides that, the TOB is $150 more than the current pedal price and you'll still have to figure out pedals. I'd rather have the wear item be cheaper and more readily available personally.

Bad news first: Unfortunately I had to raise the shipping price to $25. I've been eating $10-15 in shipping on each kit that I've sold so far.

Good news: There is a Single Diaphragm kit available now! Prices are:

Dual Diaphragm booster compatible kit: $200+25 shipping
Single (or dual) diaphragm booster compatible kit: $215+25 shipping

I think I have enough material to make another 4 or 5 kits at this price. I will be taking my templates to a machine shop or two to get prices on water jetting a few of the pieces, and then I will have to adjust the price accordingly.

Another update smile

I have been working with another member to CNC the master cylinder relocation bracket. Now I won't have to put 12+ hours of fabrication time into each setup and I can turn them around a lot faster.

Pricing has rearranged just a bit, in that shipping is reduced back to where it was (Flat rate boxes FTW!) and the cost to make these went up... it ends up being the same price.

I know the price seems a little steep compared to other pedals, but I just hope that you'll consider what you get for your money. This is more than just a pedal, you get the master cylinder relocation bracket as well, which is what allows this setup to function so well.

This product will continue to develop a bit more, with CNC cutting of the pedal arm next on the table.

Wanted to say what a cool piece this thing is! Very happy with the overall feel and application of mine compared to a traditional pedal solution offered by others! It's in a class of it's own. I've had issues with my aftermarket mcleod master cylinder hitting the control arm due to the extended length of the aftermarket unit. An f body size master has no issues!

I used my ram bearing on the t5 and 4 speed I had . I said It feels like a Honda because its easy to push the pedal and hold it . No more Lincage to deal with around headers smile . Had the z bar Lincage originally and I hated the pedal feel . Your kit I'm sure works well no doubt .

Matt, I'm not sure if you have emailed me about this in the past (my email address is on my page), but I will answer here so all can see.

I have had people use it with all kinds of transmissions. The current kit works with any of the F-body master cylinders. That gives you a few different bore diameters to work with. You get 1.0 inch of stroke, so you can figure out the fluid displaced with the cylindrical volume equation:

V = ((pi*D^2)/4)*S where V = volume, D = bore diameter and S = stroke (1").

You can then use that volume to figure out the stroke at the slave. Often, we don't have enough information about the slave or pressure plate to know how much stroke is needed, so you figure out what master is recommended or works well with that setup and determine the volume for that master, working back to a bore diameter that works with 1" of stroke.

The other option, which will be out soon, is a pedal kit that works with a Tilton 76 series or a Wilwood aftermarket clutch master cylinder. These aftermarket masters are popular with some of the F-body kits out there and are available in a variety of bore diameters. Some people have used those masters with my bracket, and it ends up poking out from the firewall a good bit and is more expensive than it needs to be. I currently have two kits that are about to begin testing, and if all goes well, this setup will be available in a couple of weeks.

I've only ever felt a few mechanical linkage setups, and I agree, it wasn't something I would want to drive every day. Even a bone stock 1970 Chevy truck had an annoyingly stiff pedal.

Regarding the height of the clutch pedal, it is a little higher than the brake pedal which isn't uncommon even in factory stock vehicles. Everything is a trade-off. Here are the SSM pedals in SSLance's car.



I have also made a modification to my clutch pedal which spaces it a bit further to the left after receiving some customer feedback. I don't claim to have a perfect product (there's no such thing), but what I do try my very best to do is make sure that every customer is happy. I make everything in my spare time in my garage. Things have evolved for the better over time and I'm sure they will continue to do so.

Here is the new setup for universal masters installed in the SickSpeedMonte.





In this mock-up picture, disregard the plumbing. If you use the 76-series master pictured, you have to use banjo fittings to clear the steering shaft. You would use a 76 series if you plan to plumb your remote reservoir with an AN fitting rather than a barb fitting or if you need the added clearance provided by the side outlet port. Otherwise, use the 75-series master with the remote reservoir adapter, such as the Tilton 75-875U, or a similar Wilwood such as the 260-10372.

Bernie, does your new universal master design bring the clutch pedal down so that it's closer to the height of the brake pedal? It looks like that from the pics you posted above but I wasn't sure. If so, is that pedal position set, or is it dependent on the master used? Thanks.

Matt, the clutch pedal is dead even with the brake pedal in my car right now, but it will depend on the hydraulics and clutch used.

You can set the resting height wherever you want it, but that's not the best way to tune the setup. I tuned mine to put the "grab" point of the clutch at a comfortable spot and the resting position of the pedal happens to be even with the brake. You use the two pedals differently though, so even if they aren't exactly even, it doesn't feel weird.

Basically, you have to push the fork (or release bearing) some distance to release the pressure plate from the disc. To do that, you'll need a certain volume of fluid forced into the slave. That requires the same volume to be forced from the master. So the ratio of the squares of the diameters (i.e. the ratio of the cross-sectional areas) between the master and slave dictates how much stroke you will need at the master, and that determines how much pedal throw is necessary. Adjusting the resting height of the pedal changes the total master stroke that you get and therefore changes the amount of fluid sent to the slave over the full pedal stroke.

By divorced, you mean with a remote reservoir?

Both masters are the same, externally at least (both with remote reservoirs).

The LT1 slave is external. The LS1 slave is a release bearing that goes on the input shaft.

A neutral safety switch will require modification of your stock pedal bracket to have a provision to mount the switch.

Not 100% sure about the V6 master, but it looks the same as the V8 from pictures on RockAuto. Same story with the 3rd gen F-body masters, they look the same. I've had a couple customers that were using 3rd gen masters, but I haven't heard if it all worked. I'm sure I would have if it didn't though.

Keith, this is still the best clutch setup available... I believe Bernie has made a few improvements here or there on the design but overall the function is still the same.

I got my kit in the mail. Everything is awesome, and the quality is great!

I can't wait to get this installed.
