Hi guys, I have a completely original 12K mile 88 Monte SS with the original factory radio. One of the front speakers is blown and the rest sound like crap. If I replace the speakers and keep the factory radio will it make a difference in sound quality? Does the factory radio have enough wattage to make new speakers sound better then the factory originals? I want to keep the original radio for the factory look.

Yes, aftermarket speakers will help, but don't expect a miracle. I wanted to keep the stock radio as well so I sent it off and got an aux port installed in it....total of $90 shipping both ways included. I'm pretty happy with that and new Kenwood 4 x 10's.

Nice car! I love that color combo and the t-tops make it even better.

Get some memphis audio 3 1/2" for the front and some Infinity reference 6 x 9's in the rear with the 4 x 10 to 6 x 9 adapters. They are about 92 dB efficient and work well with stock radios.

Are you keeping the stock radio no matter what? There are plenty of options for your year including installing a late-model CD player or even a monsoon unit.

Be sure to have some Buona Beef for me. My uncle used to own a flower shop in Berwyn and I used to love that place.

.. This prolly belongs down in "All Things Electrical" forum...

.. The factory speakers were OK quality, but typically very basic, just a speaker cone and/or main cone plus integral tweeter cone...

.. As others mentioned, some high efficiency true 3- or 4-way rear speakers plus new front tweeters or better will help a lot... also, if you don't mind cutting the rear cloth, some speakers that mount ABOVE/thru the deck with sound-transparent fabric cloth covers will add even more brightness, presence, and clarity...

Thanks for the replys guys! Yes, I want to keep the car completely stock, with the way this car has survived it would be a sin to change it at this point. (at least in my opinion).

tomanymontes, yes, I grew up a block and a half from the original Bouna! grin Great stuff! What flower shop did your uncle own?

Who did you send the stock radio to get the auxilary port in? I love my JVC head unit but it just doesnt fit the interior of the car.

Thanks for the compliment Rich.

Why did you need the aux port for your stock radio? Did you add extra speakers? I did some research and the 4X10 to 6x9 adapters seem like a PITA. I saw the 2-way Kenwood 4X10's you may have online. Remember, my originals are fine, I just wanted to see if the sound quality would improve with modern speakers using the stock radio. Would 3-way 6X9's be a lot better then the Kenwood 4X10s using the stock radio?

The aux port is so he can use an ipod with the radio like the new cars do. The adapters for the 6x9's are not a pain...you just add the adapters to the factory location and then use the wire holders to secure the speakers. Maybe 15 mins to set it up in the back.

Don't cut/change a thing, meaning cutting the deck, aftermarket radio, or anything. Leave that beautiful SS stock. Replace the speakers, if they are that shot, with same dimensions. It will never sound like our "newer cars" with kick xxxx stock stereo's without altering. You will not regret NOT cutting it. Who needs the radio on in an SS most of the time anyway. Carl

Carl, I agree with you 100%. I am not going to alter this car whatsoever. Speaker change is minimal and easily reversible. These cars are original once and I can honestly tell you, this is one of the most original cars I have come across. The interior still smells BRAND NEW!

You need to be sure not to mismatch the Ohms of the speakers to the radio, just an FYI.

Exactly Leo, cannot use speakers with less impedence or ohms than what the stock speakers were, or you will be replacing a stock stereo in short order. I think the stock speakers are 10 ohms, and most aftermarket are either 2 or 4 ohms. You can always go up in ohms on speakers but never down when using the stock radio.

Tryin' to figure out whether the Mrs across the way has a medical condition that causes her to go through lots of sugar, maybe she's doin' a lot of baking thus her constantly going to her young single male neighbor to borrow some daily....... I have the same interior! lol You could hide an aftermarket system and run a nice sounding setup but leave all the original components in their place. You would have to do some hunting but I have used them on old hot rods. Our 69 firebird has one as well.
