Guys I could use some help. I am trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing wrong but I can not get the horn parts to play nice. Here's a little background, I'm working on a 86 SS and noticed I had no horn. Took the cap off and found the cap retainer but the rest of the stuff is missing. So I order the parts and no matter in which order I install them it does not seem to work right. If someone can post the proper order, detailed instruction, pictures, smoke signals would be an incredible help.
Hole in column for horn contact kit

Horn spring. I'm pretty sure this goes next.

Horn Insulator. This part is giving me fits. I don't know which way it goes in.

The horn cap retainer and cap go on next but if I put the insulator in with the three legs toward the column I can not push the horn in and if I put the insulator with the legs toward the driver the cap pulls off in my hand.

Thanks for your help and once again as far as the horn goes I am challenged so be gentle.

my 86 has three plastic screws that hold the inside parts together, not that insulator, I have no idea which way that one goes together.

Do you at least get sounds from the horn?, when I bought my 87 it didn't have the spring with the contact that completes the circuit

Haven't tested the horn yet. Like I said I had nothing under the horn cap on the steering wheel. I've tried to find a diagram or picture on the Internet with no luck so I turned here for help.

I was trying to do my steering wheel the other day after odering a used ss Wheel and I was missing 2 of the plastic screws. I had my car stolen a few years back when I had the "Club" on and they appearantly just cut the steering wheel. When I got her back the place that fixed it just put a GMC one on. Just glad to get the car back so I didn't make that big an issue at the time.

Anyway, just to confirm that horn insulator isn't going to work...you do need the 3 plastic screws that were original with the car. From your pics...I also didn't see the contact spring and pin. Maybe thats why theres no sound or did you not just post that pic?

Do you have the ring at the top of this picture?

It goes on top of the spring plate and then the plastic insulator points inwards into the three holes.

If you have the plastic screws you don't need the insulator

that insulator is basically to keep the horn from honking all the time. i lost one of the plastic screws and put regular one with a plastic bushing i found laying around blush that new plate u have looks like its painted u need to remove the paint on the backside so it can make metal contact. on mine i had to remove the surface rust for it to work
