For those of you with T-Tops you know the light in our cars isnt that great. Heres an upgrade. Using a dome light from a third gen camaro, I believe other GM vehicles have these, just have to look. Heres my write up. Thanks to Phoenix for telling me how to do this, just want to share it with everyone.

Things you need:

Dome light assembly
1/8 or 1/16 rubber sheeting
2) 8-32 hex nuts
2) 8-32 x 3/4 screws
knife & scissors
pen & marker
2) tap splice connectors
drill bit
dremol tool

Heres what you want to start with.

Place the dome light on top of the rubber sheeting and trace it with a pen.

This is what you want to end with once you cut everything.

Place dome light on top of t-top plastic and mark the holes and square to cut out with a marker.

Mark the holes and square space so that the bulb prongs can fit thru just like this. Drill and use dremol tool to do this. ( I used just the drill bit cause my dremol is broken)

once thats done put everything together and screw in everything together so youll end up like this.

and the finished product

Nice Idea.
I would like to add this wiring info that is posted on Paul's "Lighted Rear View Mirror" DIY Write-Up.

This wire switches to ground when either door is opened, or you turn the light control fully counter-clockwise.. thereby completing the circuit path and turning on the rear passenger lights

An alternative for anyone not wanting to cut their Monte's valuable interior parts would be to find a lighted mirror from a late 80's/early 90's W-body and swap it out with your unlighted mirror. Hide wiring behind the A-pillar trim for a clean and proffesional installation. Wire to the underdash courtesy light that comes on with the dome and to an unswitched 12v fused power tap. If you need more instructions/pics just ask. Note: The dome circuit will be switched off ground.

Call us weird but my friend and I made a similar solution since he didn't want to cut into his t top firebird. An 88 I believe. I got 4 pieces of sheet metal 4 inches long by 1 inch wide and drilled a hole into one end of each piece. I got a dome light from a Chevy Malibu (1997 ls) and screwed the 4 pieces of sheet metal to the inside of the dome light 2 on each side. We then removed the t tops. Placed the dome light up to the t top panel and the 4 strips of sheet metal were sticking up about an inch above the panel rim. We just bent them over the lip towards the inside of the panel and pinched it lightly to hold tight and won't rattle during driving. We ran the wire under one of the strips of sheet metal so you couldn't see it and then under the top board, down the a pillar down to his fuse box. I forgot to mention we had painted the sheet metal strips before hand to match the interior. Sorry but I don't have pics. I'm sure someone would love to see this contraption. Sold the firebird and the man we sold it to thought It came factory so I believe we did a good job.
