Hi Guys, got a 86 SS Monte Carlo 305 and the car idles fine or decent when in park, but when you put it in drive it gets a really rough idle, and when you step on the gas it hesitates and slowly goes barely without dying, when the rpm passes 1 then it takes off. Carb has been rebuilt by previous owner, new egr valve, looks like new cables, plugs distributor cap. ANy help, maybe a module or something in the distributor? I am at a loss.

Check the choke out. Where is it idleng at in park? RPM? When in gear and the brakes applied it should idleing at 650-700. Sounds like the timing may be off a little also?

In park it sits at 1.5 rpm, (a little high i think), and yes in drive it idles at around 700. When stopped at a light, it idles rough and when you step on the gas the engine wants to die and then if you can baby it up to 1 rpm then it takes off. I was thinking the timing too, but havnt had a chance to get that checked out. It seems like the engine is choking when taking off from a stop but the carb has been rebuilt and i took it my dependable carb guy today and he said the carb is not the issue.

Sounds like the rebuilder didn't clean the idle tubes. What's the M/C dwell at idle?

that looks like the TPS, the M/C dwell should be around 30 degrees and wavering when at idle and up to operating temp, on the 6 cyl scale on the meter.

It would be a good idea to check the TPS output though the complete throttle range with a voltmeter. Worse comes to worse you could head to Sean Murphy Induction in Huntington Beach
CA. He seems to be quite the expert with CCC carbs.

I've always had ign modules totally fail, (no start). Never had one kind of fail where it affected performance.
