You know my story about my Monte . Itís mine now and I really need it to be more then a car I feel I need to keep and learn to love it not for what it is but what it could be . I said before Monteís are not my favorite car but with some changes it could be a combination of every thing in cars that I love . So a change is coming . Iím going to redo my Monte , I have asked several people there opinions . I have spoken to Tony who understands the direction I would like to go . For the first step , I thought it would be fun for everyone to throw there 2 cents in . Now the underside of the car is done , new everything except the rear end . My wife loves the color of the car so it will be repainted the same color and the wheels so everything else can go . This is what I have in mind ÖÖ.. Thereís a line where old school meets new school . I have never been a fan of the interior in the Monte so it has to go . I have wanted to change it since my son got the car 13 years ago , so now it will be done . Iím a big fan of old Chevys from 55 to 64 . No one ever talks about anything as far a dashes except grand prixís . They fit perfect but there still plastic and if you changed them plastic is a pain in the axx . So when I saw CruizinKevís project I was more then interested . Heís going were I was afraid to talk about , but is dead nuts on were I want to go ! Iím a retro man with mopar blood , but that has changed . Now Iím a Chevy man but still need to blend new with old ! So I bought a 60 Bel-Air Dash . Iím building the interior around that . This is not about the money itís about the best of the best . I would love for everyone to think about this and pool a great look that is totally out there by itís self . This is a one shot plan and the last dance for me , so it has to be right . The engine I think will be LS3 with a carburetor with 515 hp . 350 automatic with a gear vendors overdrive and a 9 inch rear end . But Iím open to any ideaís you have . Remember anything can be done !!!!! Thanks ÖÖÖÖÖÖÖ..Ulli

I've seen the dash from a grand prix/grand am new school style, that they've put into a malibu, just had to redo brackets. I'm sure tony has pictures as well of the newer camaros, there is always the dakota digital dash, theres a variety.

Engine sounds great, but why not go to an overdrive tranny (4l80e or 6l80e)? 4l80e fits in the tunnel, and the 60 needs the tunnel massaged a little bit. I think the whole thing sounds great, and I hope that with a little input everythign will be just as you hope

The reason for the 350 trans with the overdrive is I may later turbo or supercharge and I have a bullet proof new Coan 350 . But we can talk change.

Go for it! I like the dash idea. Way to think outside the box. Can't wait to see it.

From the link above...

I kind of like the dash idea, just need a place for the AC vents, unless you plan on doing without those.
Plenty of aftermarket under dash vent options though..

Here is a link for the engine, I bought my crate from them..
http://www.crateenginedepot.com/store/LS376515-HP-Crate-Engine-19244552-P2282C509.aspx

I am so beyond shifting gears again, I drove my sons LS2/T56 GTO for a week, and in city
driving, I got tired of it after 15 minutes...
So, I would love to see the TCI 6x auto tranny (a 6 speed 4L80), since I'm spending YOUR money...lol

I would get the paddle shifters too, of course...

I havenít even messed with it yet . I did measure the overall on the dash at 59 inches . I rough measured the Monte at about 55 inches . Where I cut it depends on the stirring column . Center of the column to the A post . That measurement should give me a pretty good idea of where the first cut should be . Each end has a 4 inch matched contour , 2 inch off each end would still leave 2 which would still look stock . I would like to keep the radio where it is stock if I can . I have a plasma cutter which makes cutting a joy . I wonít start till I figure out what color the interior is going to be . The dash is the first thing in and it needs to be painted what ever color the interior is and be done with it . My dash in the Monte is perfect , like new . The thought of pulling it out gives me goose bumps .

I think it will be a fun ride . Nothing over the edge but enough to be different . Seats have not been picked , I have looked at 2010 challenger seats , retro new . No one has thrown any color ideas out there ! Black Burgundy , or gray . The object of this is everyone gets a chance to build a car they would like , except with my 60 dash ...LOL Dave ( 84ZZ4 ) I sense dislikes the dash , but has picked the motor and the trans !!! He has expensive taste !!. , now the rear end ÖÖ.

I know one thing Ulli I call first dibs on that dash your removing.

I would paint the new dash the same color as the car body with silver accents. Then stuff it with autometer sport comp gauges. Then find somewhere to add a couple chrome chevy cross flags, like one in each door panel.
The transmission I would go 4L85E.

Enjoy life, family first!

Done ,Now are you saying the seats and door panels should be burgundy . What about the headliner and carpet ?

Yes you got what I'm thinking Ulli. Keep the original body color through out the new interior. But I would add accent color to the dash (silver) and the same for the door panels and seats. Maybe even a small amount of cream. All the older cars of that dash era had multi colored interiors. So I would run with the theme while keeping the main color the body color. The headliner I would leave a solid color.

I like the idea of the older dash, should deffinatly change things up!

What are you planning on using for seats? I LOVE the seats that are in my 72 Monte, they are much better than the seats in my old 88 SS. I also love the console and Horseshoe shifter in my 72.

Ok Ron , done . Burgundy seats and door panels with cream piping possibly running diagonally . Iíll have to laid it out and check on colors ÖÖ Randy , The seats are very important to the look of the car , your seats and console with the horseshoe shifter are part of the reason Iím looking at something like these http://www.procarbyscat.com/Products_Pro90.asp . The console ran in later 60ís chevelle , camaro and 70ís in the Monteís . Itís one on the top of my list . I think the shifter is a must depending on the trans .

Got a possible lead for some dash gauges if you need some, Dakota Digital has a new analog series with digital workings, that may fit (6.25" & 3"), leaving 2 more pods for additional gauges (several themes/colors available), you can thank JAWSS for the link, he was looking at another of their gauge sets:

http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/p...prod/prd725.htm

BTW, I never said I didn't like the dash, I'm just too lazy to do fab work to that extent. pullhair
I would fab up a replacement trim plate for the part between the ignition and glove box to mount the HVAC controls, radio, etc, and that can blend toward whatever console you use, giving you all kinds of real estate for radio options (double DIN?), air ride console, etc

Thanks for the link guys , I really love that center gauge . I donít need the 5 inch monster tach I have . I have a shift light mounted in the bottom left inside corner of my cowl hood . It comes on I shift !! I think the small gauges are about 2 inches on the 60 dash . But I really liked them , something will be worked out . Dave , the dash will have to be modified depending on the console I use . Some consoles can be easily modified to connect to the dash . I was looking at some old mid 60ís grand prix and GTO but I donít think they would flow right if connected . They donít need to connect but I would like to mount the a/c heater control just below the dash . I havenít checked on how far I can move the controls around past there stock location . I may shave the ignition and the wiper knob , the head lights will work out fine . I could fab up the inter console that way I could make room for the a/c vents in the front and back . If I did that I would move the window and power locks to the console . I can , but you talk about being just too lazy to do fab work to that extent , now thatís a job !! One of the guys who will be helping me loves to bag anything and pretty much has . I hate screwing with bags , itís just not natural to have tires leaning all which way ..LOL The whole thing is way more work then I have time for . But Itís a day at a time !!!
