Hello all....i've posted in the past asking about rebuilding my Quadrajet. Thanks for all the great reply's. Well...now the carb is rebuilt, car won't start. I have spark. I have fuel. Is there a trick on how to get a motor to start after placing a new/rebuilt carb on it? I spayed a little gas in the throttle, kept the peddle to the metal, cranked motor. Nothing, not even a sputter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Motor is all stock 305, 86SS.

Vacuum leak maybe, are you sure everything is connected properly?

If you sprayed some gas down the carb and it didn't start or try to fire I'd look elsewhere for a problem. Did you pul the plugs and check to see if it's flooded? How did you check for spark?

pulled the plug, put it back on wire, raised her up within view, got in the car and turned the crank. Saw the arc.

I though that maybe i did flood it, but i tried several times in several days. Went at it with different approach each time.

i pulled the gas line by the filter, turned the crank and saw the gas shooting out. I was pretty sure that I smelled gas before I did that, but I also had a gas can nearby....so I wasn't sure if it came from there or not.

I'm pretty sure everything is put back together. There really isn't a whole lot.

Did you try closing the choke completely? The gas needs to get sucked through the passages so the choke must be completely closed for this to happen. Maybe there isn't enough gas in it yet.

ok...i hope this isn't a dumb question.....how do I completely close the choke?

i just tried again, and still nothing. I again checked for spark, and there's plenty.

Ideally it closes when you floor the pedal, and the engine is cold. It opens as the engine warms then. Pull a couple plugs and see if they are wet with gas.

.. After dumping some small amount of gas down the carb. throat on choke flapper side(1/2 gas can cap full), you should have left the throttle closed(to the cold choke fast idle position), and hit the starter, it should start almost instantly and run a few seconds... the choke flapper should be closed since the engine/choke stove is cold... the secondaries air door flapper to the rear should also be closed... a few runs like this, and the fuel pump should have pumped the carb. full of gas and it should just keep running...

.. The instant the cold engine starts, the vacuum operated choke pulloff should open the choke flapper about 1/8" - 1/4" for some running air, this is precisely adjustable later to suit your engine when it's cold so that it keeps running perfectly on its own...

Open choke with finger and work the throttle with other hand, do you see a shot of gas going into carb when you do this?

Almost sounds like a weak ignition module. Even though you have spark and gas, I've seen the module cause this result. Anyone else have any clues for this guy?

Is your battery fully charged? (I really mean fully charged)

I had same issue after car setting 2 years and awaiting new engine. Got new engine in, charged battery and nothing. Was getting spark, but was not as hot as should be and wouldn't fire. Finally used starter mode on charger and was able to get fire.

Just a thought, as sometimes its the simple things.

Good luck and heep us posted.

Yeah. Battery charged, and re-charged, and also put charger on starting mode when battery was getting weak.

I'm at the point where I wish I would of sent it in to someone to rebuild it.

i'm going to pull it all off, and start over. I may of missed something.

Thanks for everyone's help.

So i checked for spark again...i always checked #8, cause it was easy to get to in my garage....checked #1, and no spark. #8 still has spark. Changed plugs, and moved wire to different spots on cap...still no spark on #1.. I may need to get some new wires...new plugs while i'm at it.

Well if you moved the wires to different terminals on the cap you will need to find tdc and check the rotor position. Sounds like you got the initial timing all messed up.
