Has anyone upgraded their stock shifter? Mine is very inaccurate on the gear selection. I ordered a b&m quick silver shift. Is an aftermarket shifter hard to install? Anything I should remember?

I replaced my stock shifter and console for this B&M shifter

Install was pretty easy but time consuming. The hardes part was wiring the neutral and reverse circuits.

Your stock shifter has nothing to do with the gear indicator. Its not even connected directly to it. The shift lever on the trans is connected to the rods to the column where the indicator is. I'm not sure what parts are worn out in there but I believe its the spring in the dash for the indicator thats causing your problem. Also, I have a B&M Pro-Stick installed in the factory location.

If your reading is not accurate then it could be two things. First the steel rod that goes from the transmission to the steering column is out of adjustment. Just loosen up and re adjust at the trans linkage as needed. Second the wire that attaches to the column from the indicator has a small clip and is out of position. You have to remove the dash bezel to see it. It's on the lower drivers side and can be slide around the circumference of the column for corrections. As long as the shifter cable isn't stretched you should be ok.

1986 Monte Carlo SS LS3 build almost running. NOT.....LOL
Sold all my cars but the Super Slug. I will rebuild the car and up the bar a bit. Ridetech, custom frame, new supercharged LT4 or a LSX 454 and much more.

Like Ron said above, you can adjust the indictor on the dash just by moving the clip thats attached to the column ring, its cinch and takes a few seconds.

The indicator is gone. I put in new gauges. The shifter itself doesn't put it In the correct gear. It feels off.

That looks very 'at home' there! How much finageling did you have to do to get that alignment?
