I just compleated turning my 3rd. brake light into LED for $9.95
I found a company in Holly Michigan, that makes led boards and I got a 6" red led wide view board off of them.
To begin,You need to take your light apart.

After you get it apart(2 screws),you toss out the chrome plastic and bulb. Then you peal off the sticky tape from the rear of the LED board and press it on to the screw studs inside the original housing.

Then you put the lens back on and screw it back together.
Push the wires down into the trunk and splice them together.
You are finished.

Hope this helps someone else.

The company that makes the leds can be contacted at icu2dad@aol.com
I am not a part of this company, and you may find a better deal some where else.
My photos are to big. But I can e-mail them if you want to see them.

Good luck
Irene

Thanks for the great write-up!! That looks real nice. I'll have to try this on my aerocoupe where the 3rd light is a different design. I'll pass along my procedure as well. Thanks again.

Great job on the pics and write-up. Thanks for your effort and sharing the process with all of us. I'll be converting my '86 SS with the LED bar and will "tweek" your procedure by painting the inside of the housing with silver/chrome paint for more illumination. Thanks again.

Hi Folks,

Many PSA's lose their adhesion at high temperatures, and this area of the car can get quite hot (roughly 200 deg F) in sunlight. For this reason I'd use a mechanical fastening scheme as a backup - maybe, for example, some small nylon tie-wraps could be snugged in between the LED's and the screw bosses.

Best,
MAP

I am about to do this upgrade, the socket for my brake light is rotted out by the sun which is why I am going to LED. Just ordered the LED board from EBAY and I am going to use wire to hold it in place.

Alternatively: could you not simply cut slots in the outer edges of the curved reflector, insert the board, and tack it in place with some hotglue (on the back side)?

Hey Guys,

Take a look at this one. It appears to be self contained.

If you are looking for any LED bulbs, try this link.
http://www.autolumination.com/ I haven't bought anything from them but it looks pretty good. I own and operate an auto accessory business and it is hard to find all of these bulbs, sockets and pigtails in one location.

Also I am new to the site. Been watching the site for a while and just learning what's here.

The site looks great

Bringing back memories
after 17 years I finally bought another 87 MC SS

About 5 years ago I made my 3rd brake light into an LED unit. I bought some of the kind with holes from Rat Shack and bought some red LEDs from SuperBright.com ...just make sure you use the correct current limiting resistors.
As strange as it seems you need to use red LED's (not white) for the light to pass through the red lens.
I held the board in place with high temp RTV.

When I was updating to LED using Irene's write up, I realized you could easily get two of the six inch boards into the housing with no problem. Is there any reason not to such as current draw or heat??

thanks

Looks like a easy enough project ty for the information . I think I will be doing this in the future aswell as getting some LED replacement bulbs for the tailights.

I followed this DIY (thanks for writing!), but I used two strips.
The result is perfect: a bright red 3rd brakelight that fills the whole surface.

So, my advice, when you do this, use two strips and not one.

Instead of a rigid board, I just got two 12 inch flexable red led stips from Autozone ($20) and just stuck them to the refector inside the light and trimmed off the excess. It looks great. As a backup I drilled small holes above and below the strips and just used some safty wire to hold them on.

how hot do they get? im wondering if with 2 strips some small vent holes or slots or something towards the top of the housing might be a good idea. with the sun hitting it all day and then you sitting at a red light for 5 min on the way home might be enough to melt something. just a thought.

Hello Ethan,

LED typically do not get hot. I used two homemade strips of white LED's when I converted over (I didn't drill any holes). It will look a lot cleaner and brighter once finished. I even installed them is my reverse lamps, all inside bulbs were change as well. It looks really nice and bright.
