I was repalecing the bulbs in the speedometer on my Monte SS. I pull everything back together, take it out for a drive. I notice that as the needle moves up and down it wiggles real bad as if something is in the gears. You hear a tick the faster you go, it gets faster. What would have caused this and how can I fix it? I don't know how to take out the speedometer completely. I would like to take it out and make sure that nothing fell in there causing it to start ticking like that and wiggling. I know there is a way to remove the speedometer and I just can't figure it out. Also the Speedometer worked just fine before I moved it a little. Thanks for the help guys. I do appreciate it. Trevor

That sounds more like a cable issue, than the speedo itself. If you moved it, you might have put a kink in the speedometer cable. On the back of the speedometer head, there's a tab that you need to squeeze to release the cable. Try checking it to make sure it's not binding anywhere and reconnect it. If you didn't have any issues with it before, it's probably something that happened when you reassembled the dash. Good luck!

I agree with TPI. If after checking the cable, the speedo still jumps and clicks, then pull speedo back out, pull cable out and lube cable. Or, go ahead and lube cable while you have the speedo out so you don't have to pull it back out. Any parts store sells the speedo cable lube.

Remove cable at the the rear of the speedo, pull cable out, and clean. If it worked good before, I'd make sure the rear attachment is back where it should be. I also used brake cleaner to flush junk from the housing, THEN lube it. Use compressed air to dry it out first.

I have the same issue on my '86. I wasn't able to remove the speedometer needle - did you have any luck?

Why do you want to remove the needle?

Speedo heads rarely malfunction (I've actually never heard of it). It's almost a guarantee that the cable needs to be lubed or replaced as mentioned

Mine made an awful squeaking after getting about 150 miles on the engine and drivetrain after a total rebuild. We just pulled out the cable and lubricated it, problem solved. The needle still wiggles a little bit but it doesn't squeak anymore. While you're in there you might as well do the lighting upgrade and maybe even replace the headlight switch if it needs to be done.

In order to remove the speedometer, I need to remove the needle first right? Is there a better way to remove the cable and lube it without removing the speedometer?

No don't remove the needle. You have to remove the small silver bolts that hold the speedometer to the inner housing (the blue plastic) then pull it out far enough to reach back & press in the clip that retains the cable. the speedo should pull right out then but there is a wire holding the VSS to the back of the speedo that has to be removed if you want to take out the speedo.

The way GM should have made it in 1987! Coming soon 383 w/ roller cam!

sometimes you cant pull it out far enough to get to the clip, better off reaching from the bottom and pressing the clip, all 3 dashes i have taken out i had to reach through all of the wire throught the bottom

I have a 1986 Monte Carlos SS. Spedometer stopped working. I need to replace both the upper and lower cables. I am being asked if it has a gear adapter and what the transmission code is. How do I find this out? I cannot get the part at a local parts store. I have to find it on line
