Okay, I cannot find any info on production numbers for the 4-speed cars. Can anybody help? This car is a black hardtop-no vinyl, dark red 60/40 split bench interior with a V8 and a 4 speed. Has the rear anti-sway bar but other than that, no options. AC delete even. The body is pretty nice too as are the framerails. I'm thinking about stripping it for the pedals which I can use on my 1980 t-top car for my build but since this is the very first verifiable 4 speed I've ever found for 78-80 Montes, I am reluctant to strip it even though it is a bare bones optioned car otherwise.

DO NOT STRIP IT!!! I do not have the exact #'s on how many 4 speed 78's that where made. But they are a very rare car. If you do not mind cound u take as many pics as possible and send them to tgmcc@thirdgenmontes.com cause I am rebuilding the Third Generation Monte Carlo Club and would like to have it in the site when it is done. Come check us out soon. www.thirdgenmontes.com or www.thirdgen.tk rite now the only thing running is the forum.

I have to agree, don't strip it. Keep it & restore it someday, buy the clutch pedal from John Bzdel. It is no different than the ones you have except the bolt is longer, some bushings & the brake will need trimmed. I wish I could find one to build someday.

I had a 1978 monte with a factory 4 speed but it had a V6(Buick 231). I had it back in 1984 till 1987 with I sold it for a truck what a mistake. If I remember I read somewhere back then there were only 1700 made with the V6. But I could be wrong. My wife found the car years later but it had no motor or tanny and had been wreaked so I did not get it.

We have junk yard here closing, price of scrap is so high a junk car will bring $300. If you have 200 junkers in your yard that is a lot of cash.

I have mixed feeling about the 3rd gen Montes. If the body is junk, which many are at THIRTY YEARS OLD, I would take the stick parts out of it and leave it for someone else to pick on. If the body is good, and particularly the front and rear bumpers, lights, grille, maybe consider buying it to resale. Those are the hardest parts to find in fair condition, really hard to find good pieces.

If it's a V-8 car take everything related to the stick, bell, fork, linkage, pedals, leave the Saginaw 4 spd, flywheel, clutch. The flywheel is a two piece seal and most likely junk. If the clutch is used forget it, probably mostly a non-performance piece anyway. The Saginaw is at best comparable to a T5 for strength, usually a 2.87 1st gear, BUT NO OD.

Decisions, decisions, to many decisions.
Bob

Hey mmc427ss Im pretty sure your the guy I met at the kimberton car show.

If you do end up parting it you might want to save the trans/shifter hump console and boot as these would make good conversion pieces for someone. This is if they are using the saginaw of course. Also incase you run into a v6 3 speed car somewhere the bellhousing and clutch fork are the same as the v8 cars. (78-81)

Man either way do not part it out. The body is repairable as long as the rust did not make it into the a-pilers.

I didn't know they made V8 4 speeds in those years. i always thought and heard, that if they were 4 speeds, then they came with a V6 only.

In that case, its really rare.....

robs 85ss, yes we met at Kimberton. Should have stopped over to talk a little. Sean, monteman1978 and I know each other also, he is just a LITTLE biased toward 3rd gen Montes.

I've seen several 3rds in the U-Pull yard around here and they are usually rusted very badly and would cost a bundle to bring back to life.

I have seen only one other manual equipped 3rd gen and it was a V6 car prior to finding this one. I would not have much fun driving it in the humid midwest being a black car with AC delete-ugh! But it is rare. I don't know how many memebers know, but I also have what I believe to be THE rarest Malibu as far as any I've seen from anybody else-and it was a Maliburacing.com member who won it on Ebay two years ago and it changed hands twice before I ended up with it through shear dumb luck and it's never going to leave my possesion. It's a factory triple black 79 Malibu and here's the total list of options it has according to the build sheet which matches the car and its optons: 305/4-barrel, 4-speed with the optional Hurst shifter, buckets, console, pw, pdl, rear defrost, AC, tilt wheel, tach/gauge package, pulse wipers, AM/FM digital stereo(wow), power antenna, fr/rr bumper guards, F41 suspension, 2.73 posi, HD cooling and it still wears its original aluminum drums out back. This car sat in MN. for the last 10 years and now I have it. I would like to think as far as options, this is the rarest Malibu I've ever seen for 78-83 cars. I could not belive my eyes when I seen it-why somebody could not see the rarity of it is beyond me. Its not an LS6 car, but for these years, it just like finding one. A guy asked me once what it would take to buy it and I didn't want to sell it but after some hounding from him, I said $8500 as-is. He thought I was crazy and maybe I am but you'll never find another one like this one. My first few NOS pieces I found for it are outer tail light housing bezels, GM power antenna assembly and a factory NOS digital stereo correct only for 1979 cars. This one will be a keeper for me-one day when the magazines want to find who has the rarest G-bodies (a technically), I'll roll this car out and freak some people out.

I would verify the VIN, for the correct engine, and if it really is suppose to be a V8, then i would keep it.

I was like 16 when they sold it, but i didn't care for the V6..lol, so i never even gave it a thought...........

That's too bad, Sean. A guy I knew in college had one ... light blue color with (iirc) white and blue interior.
