Because of a new tire and wheel package I bought, the search is on for new headers. Theres no way that the Hooker headers I run now with the tube outside the frame rail are going to work anymore. So...

Hedman makes a Husler series header for our cars in 1 3/4 x 3 collector with the part number 65218. Uncoated this header costs $500.00. I'm pretty sure in the past I've heard people mention using 70-81 headers on our cars with only needing a slight massage on 1 driver side tube. Hedman makes a basic Husler for 70-81 Camaros that has very similar routing to my current Hookers for $200 uncoated. Heres a picture from Summit:

I have the means to correct a tube clearance issue if needed, and saving $300 before coating would really help out.

Much thanks to anyone with input!

check this thread out on malibu racing. hes referring to a big block, but i guess small block may fit too. just wanted to make you aware just in case in the past when you have heard that they fit, they were actually talking about big block, not small block. when i bought my headers, i purchased them from advance. the first set didnt come close to fitting, so i just returned them with no problems and ordered a new set. when im not positive about something's fit, i try to purchase local so that i can return it easily if it doesnt work out.
check this out

JLP,
If that's the case, I know they're a little more expensive.. but Dynatech makes a stepped 1 3/4" to 1 7/8" header for those cars.
When we were trying to find a large tube SBC header for dads Jeep, Stahl told us they would send whatever we wanted and we could return them with no problems/questions as long as they were all beat up. We ordered an outside frame setup for an S10 but they didn't work out right, and true to their word, Stahl took them back with a full refund no questions asked.

There was a thread a few months back that pretty much stated that the 1 3/4" Dynatech headers were a drop in.. Wish I hadn't of already ordered my Hooker's..

I had a set of camaro headers on my lemans, they fit fine, but that was 1 5/8"..

I just test fitted the Hooker Super Comps last night - what a pain in the butt!! Do I ever wish that Shoenfield didn't have a problem with the Moroso oilpan!!

you'll lose some low end torque with those husler headers that's what it says in summit catalog,im sure you knew that though. check out hedman tork step headers or the summit brand one of them should have the size your looking for.

Jerry, exactly which headers did you use?

Rob, Did you buy the 2242s?

Thanks Daryl, I'll look into those.

Jose,

I'm not sure I understand why I'll be losing torque. I currently have 1 3/4 primary tubes, and need to switch header styles because of a clearance problem. The Huslers I'm looking at have 1 3/4 tubes also.

To answer your orignial question, yes they will fit. I use Flowtechs (p/n 11100) for that application on my SS. Driver's side fit perfectly, I'd be surpised if the driver's side header for a g-body application wasn't exactly the same. The passenger side just needed a dimple on the #4 primary.

Thanks David,

What was the passenger side tube hitting that the dimple was necessary? Do the headers hang low?

I'd say yes the dimple is necessary. It is because it would hit the upper control arm otherwise. The only other option that I can think of is grinding on the control arm to create some clearence, and I'm not sure how much that can get you. I used a hammer and a brass drift. It worked fine.
The headers don't hang very low at all, and my front end is slightly lowered. One of the complaint I hear a lot of about long tubes headers is ground clearence. Trust me, that is NOT an issue on our cars. Not unless the car is seriously lowered several inches.

Hi Jeremy,

Yes I bought the 2242's - man, what a pain.. Had to grind down the drivers side UCA bolt and nut.. Had to massage the firewall lip to allow for it to pass.. Cutting out the inner wheel wells, moving brakes lines.. And to top it all off - the passenger side seems to be turning upward, which won't play well with the purple hornies I just bought!!

What wheel combo is making you switch up? I take it a lower stance or wider front tire is in your future..

Much thanks for the input guys!

Rob,

I have small wheel spacers on the front of my car, and always stuck with narrow 225 tires on my 3.5 BS rims. Even with this setup, my turning radius was quite limited. I now bought rims with 4.5 backspacing, and 245 tires are going on the front. Thats not going to play well together at all. I'm not gonna lie, once the 2242s are installed and fitted, they are a pretty easy header to work around. My main gripe with them is "the frame tube" in regards to tire clearance on street rims. Luckily I didnt have to do any mods with the control arm for fitment. It seems thats hit and miss on different cars, depending on how many shims are used for alignment.

David, not to get nit-picky here, but where did the header contact the upper A-arm? I have the small circle track tubular uppers to install when I have the car apart, would that help?

Yes for g-body, and I had to cut the lower control arm on the driver side to get them to fit... by the rear bushing on the back of the ear, also cut the frame bracket in the same place to get them to fit nice.

Just as an update,

I ended up buying the 01-22000 1 3/4 x 3.5 Dynatech headers, and after mocking up the passenger header... I'm leaning towards returning them and buying something that fits a little better. Although these are a very high quality header (dare I say they actually look better put together than the Hookers I currently have), it appears that they really favored the engine setback some dirt cars use when they designed these.

2 tubes are contacting the lower control arm mount, and other spots I'd be lucky to slide a credit card between them. One tube comes so close to the cradle in the middle that its contacting the brake line, and without major surgery I have nowhere else to go with the brake line. If the engine was back an inch the header would fit perfect.

I'm now leaning towards the 65218 Hedman Huslers.

What was the issue with the Schoenfelds? I've run them with a number of different Moroso pans,,, but have never run them with a road race/kickout style pan, was that it?

Original owner of 1985 SS black hardtop w/gray interior. Frame-on restoration - 406 sleeper w/ heavily ported FIRST TPI. However the 1.875" headers, 3.5" duals, TH400, Ford 9", notched frame, and 10-point cage w/swing-out bars might tip you off it's not a lil' ole 305 TPI. Other mods: 2" drop, 18" wheels, f/r disk brakes, and custom stereo system.

I just read that reply again. The driver side gave you problems???? How was your clearance on the passenger side with the lower control arm mount and brake line on the backside of the cradle? Yikes.

That really sucks that you had the same problems as me... I just ran out of money and made them work.

The driver side sits perfect, the passenger was the retarded side. I had to do some cutting and recently went back and used an air hammer to massage the frame in the spot that is REAL close. I also crushed the brake line when I was fitting the motor in (big roundyround pan) and I used a union to fix it and put a little more pipe in when I did so I could run it on the backside of the k-member instead of the top.... if that is where you are talking about??? that is how I got it to work.

OK, thanks for the input Bear.

Regarding the Schoenfelds you had (Bear), did you have issues other than the A/C box? It would be great to hear your thoughts, as you've had both and could compare the way they fit up.

I don't think there was any real problems with the schoenfelds, except the AC box.

They have no other real problems except I had to clearance the primaries for the bolts that keep it on the head... you can get to them with a wrench.... but.... who wants to use a wrench when there are faster ways? \:D

The collectors did end at weird angles (pointing outwards) and at different lengths, so it might be a little tricky to get your exhaust guy to fab something up other than a straight add-on piece.

They also come unpainted, but I used grill paint on mine, and also on the now Dynatech's, and it has held up great in the months I have had them on.

Heres tomorrows headache... I mean project-

Left to right- Dynomax 1 5/8 x 3", Dynatech 1 3/4 x 3.5", Hooker 1 3/4 x 3".

I was really considering putting the smaller tube Dynomax headers on my car till I checked em out today. The collectors are put together pretty poor inside and the coating is peeling off the inside already too. Great header for the money, but I dont think I'll use them.
