If you've read "Newbie and a Barn Find" you know that I got Dad's SS running a couple of weeks ago. I've put a couple of hundred miles on it. Changed the oil, filters and transmission fluid. I was going to sell it for Dad. He would love to keep this car forever, but he needs the money.

My father adopted me when I was 12. Raised me as his own - he "manned up" and raised two children that were not his (brother and I). Tough times growing up, money was always tight and Dad worked alot of hours driving truck to make ends meet. As time went on, Dad began to finally get ahead in life. He bought a new Freightliner for work and one day, in a moment of passion, he bought the most beautiful car he ever saw. A 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Aerocoupe. He was so proud of that car - it was the only new car he's owned in his entire life...

Dad's health took a pretty serious turn for the worst a couple of years ago. He has severe emphysema. As of 3 weeks ago, he's down to 20% lung capacity, and he's still driving a truck. Ever been so sick you can't breathe? Can't walk across the room without stopping to rest? Every day is like that for him, and still he gets off his ass and goes to work. Want to know what a hero looks like? Looks like my Daddy.

He can't do maintenance anymore so the Freightliner and his independent authority has gone away. After 20 years of working for himself, he now works as a driver for another company. He's sold or cashed in everything of value to keep afloat and pay his bills. Won't take handouts, keeps struggling along. I've watched over the last few years as he has become a shadow of himself. A ghost of the man who was. He has no future and he knows it. Maybe two or three years. So many places he hasn't gone and so many regrets for him.

Life is funny. Sometimes things fall into place for reasons we do not understand but are clearly meant, by a higher power TO BE. I have a 76 Jaguar with a 300hp small block chevy in it. It was stolen and wrecked. I bought it back for $75 because I knew how good the engine was. Been sitting on it since. Now I have Dad's SS running (ratty, but it does run). I was going to sell it and give him the money. But something else happened. A rental we've been trying to sell for TWO FREAKING YEARS sold yesterday (thank you for the rate change....). So here's the new plan.

I'm going to tell my Daddy a big fat hairy lie. I'm going to say one of you guys bought the car. I'll give him money from my rental sale, I'll get the title. Then the work begins. Drop it a couple of inches, disc brakes in the rear, upgrade in the front - 10" doesn't cut it..., new interior - black leather, the 300 hp 350, 700R4 and a new fabulous black paint job courtesy of my husband Steve (OUTSTANDING PAINTER+++).

Then when it's all low and glossy and black, nice rumbly 350, give it back to him, big big surprise on that day. He gets to have something beautiful. Something cool, something he can go to cruises with and just enjoy for the rest of his life. However short that will be...

What do you guys think? Have I lost my mind?

Not at all! I love it. What better way to repay a man that gave his life for your benefit, than to let him relive the happy times of his life cruising in his monte. That is a very good thing. I see he did an outstanding job raising you. Good luck And keep us updated on the project.

I think that's an awesome idea. The only thing I would change is the choice of a 7004r, unless you just happen to have one lying around.

If you rebuilt the stock 2004r, you'd have just as strong a transmission and wouldn't have to mess around with a modified driveshaft or crossmember.

First of all it sounds like you have one heck of a father......

Sounds like a sweet plan and i like the idea. As long as u think he wouldn't mind the modifications, as opposed to keeping it factory.

Good luck to you AND your father....

Keep us posted!

An inspiration to us all, you are... Nothing can be better than having a cause greater than yourself, especially when it is for a loved one. This will bring the bond between you and your dad so close, he will remember it all his days and you will keep remembering even when he is gone, which I hope is many years from now.

i want to do something similar to my dad with his 58 impala, that would be a truly awesome if you did that. good luck with the project.

also don't get a 700-r4, in my person opinion the TH-200-4r is the best overdrive trans GM has built. the gears are perfect for the size and weight of a Monte Carlo SS and it can be built just as a strong as a 700-r4

again good luck and god bless with your project.

Thanks for the encouragement and the advice on the 2004R. Reusing that one (shifts quite well now) is going to save me alot of money. Even with an decent overhaul I'll be money ahead of the 700R4 and conversion bits. THANKS!

Probably take 6-8 months to complete (and pay for) the things I want to do to the car. That puts completion date right around Father's Day. How about that...

I'll keep all-ya-all posted - but again - thanks for the encouragement.

That is so awesome, and I wish you the best of luck on the restoration. I almost would hate to make all of those modifications though, maybe he would be even more surprised to see the car again just like it rolled off the assembly line 20 years ago... just an idea.

Awesome idea for sure. Hopefully you can keep it under wraps until unvieling it to him. I can only imagine how happy that would make him, seeing his car return to him better than it ever was, without even knowing you had it all along. Best of luck with the resto, as well as you and your father

Your story is inspirational to me. I never got the opportunity to repay my mother for all of her sacrifices, but you have given me an incredible idea. My Da has mentioned that as he's getting older he's thinking of selling some of his cars in his collection and has offered first dibs to his kids. I have an eye on his '69 Camaro SS, but it is in dire need of the same overhaul I am doing on my Monte right now...maybe I may be able to pull off the same thing for him and his Camaro...hmmm. I love your story, Your Dad has raised a great kid!!
