'83-88 Monte SS Convertibles

Where are you Monte Carlo Convertible experts? What is the story behind the convertibles for the '80's Monte Carlo's? I have seen enough of them over the years that it tells me that they had to be series-built for a dealership or something more regular than random customers. I know that a Pontiac dealer had around 70 new Fieros converted and sold at thier dealership. Many other cars also got series built conversions before GM/Ford/Mopar commissioned regular production. Cars like Camaro/Firebird, Mustang, Ciera, Eldorado, DeVille, Toronado, Skylark, etc got the convertible treatment by independant coach builders and each sold by the hundreds. I would bet the same story is true about these Monte Carlos. They are just too common to be garage hack jobs or one-off projects by a few companies. I am betting that one company built several dozen of them. What do you know? Enlighten us, please.

I did find reference to a few '80-'82 Monte/Regal/GP/Cutlass Supreme conversions done by Steas Industries('81,'82), National Coach Engineering('82), Classic Marketing Group('80), Classic Group of Companies('82), CoachBuilders Ltd('82). These were all made in very limited numbers and few were built. Most were not MC's, but were higher-end Regals or Cultass. These were also before convertibles became available from the factory on a few new cars starting in mid-'82.

Any other convertible builder info or photos you can add to this thread would be appreciated.

Here are a few Monte SS convertibles for sale right now.

Alright......you sent a bunch of pics, but you did not state which conversion company converted each car. You mentioned that Hess & Eisenhardt did a few and so did Matrix3. Which maker modified each of the cars in the auctions/craigslist or the other photos you included. About how many Matrix3 have you ever seen? How many H&E? Are there other coach builders you have seen converting these Monte's? Who were they? What company converted your cars?

I ask a lot of questions because I am researching an article on '77-'90 conversions and I want to make sure the Monte's get full credit. Thanks.

there are no set in stone numbers to date but from what i been told buy dealers i know who had this cars done before they hit the show room floors in 1985 matrix did 50 power top ss monte carlos in 1983 Hess & Eisenhardt an ASC and small places that they farmed out work to built 100 SC monte convertibles but as i have come to see every now and then a 83 SS rag top pops up or a 84 power top sc none of these people seam to know who built there cars.. you will also cometo find out tons of monte convertible we just home made jobs... i hope this has helped you if you want to know more and i can be of help let me know. in 1977 a small shop in Fla was doing them on montes and grand prixs i know this because my brother had a 77 monte convertible power top car.
tag from my monte convertibles
the other sticker i have to take pic of it ops i forgot the other convertible was done by car craft company

Great information. Thanks for sharing. In my efforts to understand what companies made conversions of the Monte Convertible, here is a list of companies that made most of the general conversions in the eighties. Please review and make corrections.

AHA Manufacturing Lmtd - no
American Convertible Corp. - no
American Custom Coachworks (ACC)
American Sunroof Corp. (ASC) (Yes, built some)
Armbruster/Stageway - no
Auto Form Corp. - no
Autodyne Corp - no
Bivouac Industries - no
Car Craft - (yes, you have one. What other years do you know of?)
Chicago Coachworks - no
Classic Group of Companies - (I have '82 Motor Trend article stating they built them)
Coach Builders Lmtd (I have '82 Motor Trend article stating they built them)
Coach Conversions Inc. (I have a brochure copy for MC conv in '81)
Coach Design Group(San Remo) - no
Conversion Concepts(Carrozza) - no
Convertible Concepts - no
Convertible Specialists Inc. - no
Elan Convertible Ltd. - no
Emess Coach Builders - no
Global Coach - no
Grandeur Motor - no
Hess & Eisenhardt (yes, you have one. What other years do you know of?)
Intermeccanica - no
International Coach - no
Matrix3 (You said they built 50 power top Montes in '85)
Milan Coachbuilders - no
National Coach Engineering (I have '82 Motor Trend article stating they built them)
Silcco - no
Steas Industries (I have a brochure copy for MC conv in '81 & '82)
R. Straman Coach - no
Tomaso(Swift) - -no

Please review, correct and add detailed comments to above list!!!

A few more clarifications:
1. Your '83 Burgundy is a Hess & Eisenhardt non-power top
2. Your '83 White is a Car Craft non power top
3. Who made the '88 SS conv in NewJersey?
4. Who made the '83 SS conv in Augusta?
5. The '87 SS conv on ebay you think is a backyard car. Could it just be another coach company that you are not familiar with? Check for added structural members and cross bracing. It looks well made to my eyes.
6. Who made the '82 Conv on CarDomain?

Please show photos of other Montes that you know who the builder was. Anyone else out there care to help out?

Hi,I'm new to the site.I was looking for info on convertibles because I was looking into buying the one in Augusta,Maine.I checked the car out tonight, even droveit.I don't know the values of these cars but in my opinion it's far from a $12,000 car and I turned it down at the asking price of $7,000.If any of you are interested I'd advise checking it out in person as opposed to relying on pictures. The owner is a good guy and certainly means well and for all I know it could be worth the money.I hope I've been helpful to anyone who might be interested.

Sorry this isn't a Monte, but related. We don't see too many Monte/Regal/Cutlass/GP convertibles, so thought I would add this to this thread. If this company made a Regal convertible, they probably also made some Monte convertibles. This is the second Regal by Coach Conversions Inc that I have seen, so some Monte's surely exist.

http://yakima.craigslist.org/car/650958306.html

'81 Regal Conv. Looks nice and solid. I asked who did the conversion and he said there is a label in the door jamb, stating Coach Conversions Inc. If the link is bad, you can email the owner at: lov2hop @ yahoo.com

Also, an update on what I am trying to do and why I am documenting this information:

As these cars get older, fewer and fewer people know or understand the story about these cars. I find that most owners of them don't even realize that they were not "factory original" convertibles. The better job we can do to promote the 'special-ness' of the coach-built convertible, the more likely it will become that these cars get some deserved respect in the car collecting circles. That means fewer will get thrown away (crushed) and more will be saved and restored. That also means the cars we own could go up in value.

If I can document the history of most conversions built, then by having the story available to the masses, creates a resource for all to learn about these cars, and how rare they are, and how expensive they were when new. I hope you can help me shed some light on part of the story. I will cite you as a resource, you can count on that. Thanks for your help!!

Please post on this MonteSS thread what I might be able to change to the wiki entry, based on any information you know.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
On another note, I tried to research Wind Wind, but can find no mention of their existence. Is it possible that they were a contractor for one of the other conversion companies? Could you post a photo of the and the label? Thanks!!!

Tony, I have looked for your response to me, but cannot find it. Please reply back to me or post what you know to this thread.

Just found this one for sale. Didn't know if others had posted it yet. Had a discussion with the owner and he seems pretty solid.
------------------------------------------
1983 Monte Carlo convertible white with blue top. Dealer convertible option. SS nose addition.
Origional blown v6 has been replaced with an 86' Olds 307 4bbl HEI and 200-4R trans (no computer). *Approximately 70k origional miles on the engine and transmission. Headers with flowmasters. Numerous new parts including radiator, hoses, belts, shocks, battery and dual exhuast trans crossmember.*The car needs a new top but the manual frame is complete and working. *The origional nose and the factory rims are included. *Also included in the sale will be an 87' posi 4:11 rear, 2 power doors,SS power steering unit, rear SS spoiler, and SS exhaust (rear back).

The car is solid as there are no rust holes in the trunk or the floors. this car would be an easy restore as far as a restores go. I put the front end cross bars and supoorts on the car when I transplanted the V8 in. I would really prefer to have someone who appreciates the car have it as opposed to someone who does not and would eventually trash the car.

Tony - Thanks for posting that Ad from CBL. Do you know what publication it came from? Looks like it might be from Automotive News? It is interesting to see the remarks at the bottom that they were affiliated with Barrows and Armbruster Stageway...somehow. I have had conversations with the former owner of CBL....he never mentioned that. Might be time for another call. It seems that many companies installed the same kit under a partnership like this.

As for Cutlass Supreme convertibles....I have seen 3 for sale in the past month. Good looking cars. I also was contacted by an owner of a Cutlass that owns a half-convertible-targa style conversion. It was weird, and first I'd seen. I think it was by Classic Group because I have an old brochure for a Regal Targa convertible they built.

I really do hope you keep me updated about more conversions you know about. I am still very interested in learning more.

Tony - Would you say that your H&E conversion looks just like the Car Craft conversion? The reason I ask, is it appears they were the same company working out of the same factory. I look forward to your reply.

Tony,
I wondered if you knew anything about this Monte convertible? The kid that owns it seems to be clueless.

I have a 1984 Monte Carlo that's a custom convertible. It has a brand new rebuilt 350 bored 30 over, 4 barrel double pumper holly carb. Black jack headers, 350 turbo TCI, automatic tranny, 373 Richmond rear end, 2200 stall converter, purple horny exhuast. In great shape, no rust. Runs and drives, ready to go. The tranny is new, only 1000 miles on it. If interested please e-mail me at screamin33s@yahoo.com. Thanks!
