I'm having a problem with the power windows. Really the passenger side is worse than the driver's side. There's not that much of a problem on the way down, but going up is a hassle. I bought the car like this an am looking to fix it. Any suggestions on starting points?

Hector, cleaning and lubing the tracks and gear mechanism on the drive motor will help. How do your seals look on the outside edge of the door? if they are bad, water is getting down into the door and causing corrosion as well as dirt and stuff is clogging up the tracks.

If the cleaning and lube doesn't work, a replacement drive motor is probably gonna be the fix.

Yeah the seals aren't in that great of shape. They are on the list of things to buy. but as it stands I do keep it in the garage so that may help. Thanks for your help. I definitely need a starting point.

i had the very same problem. i could sit there and say the abc's before the passenger window went up, heck, if i tried to do it with the car off, it wouldn't even make it all the way up. so i tore the doors apart, and riped everything out of the doors, put the new motors in, (along with new lock actuators) put new window felts on, new door weatherstripping, and i first used the supplied screws with the motor, but for 1/4" holes it's just not such a good idea, so i went to my works body shop and got 1/4" window regulator rivets, and "the big daddy riveter" from the Mac tool guys, because i couldn't find one big enough anywhere else, and the rivets are the way to go.

but yeah, i say try lubing first, but you'll probually be alot happier with the new motors, i know i am.

Mine is the same way, to the "T". I did replace the motor with an autozone unit cause I heard they are faster but it made no difference. Yes I did use white lithium grease to lube everything up but it was no better when I was done.

There is an article in the Chevelle Magazine that came out this month. they replaced the window motors on an El Camino. Same info and part numbers should apply.

Don't forget to check the switches. I have/had the same issue. This issue was the switch...put 12 to the wire, the sucker flew up.

Really, you should invest in a relay for the windows. If you route the main power wire to act as a switch for the relay, not only have you drastically reduced voltage drop by bypassing the OE wiring, but now you can mount a relay which will provide up to 30-amps of juice-combine that with freshly greased tracks and you'll see that window fly up into the window channel! -Jabin

Do you mean use the up/down switch to energize the relay and use 12v on one of the relay contacts straight to the window? It would have to be fused of course....Is that what you mean?

The relay deal will work. We did that to my 87 4x4 truck and now they go up and down as fast as my 99 SS windows do.

Ya, I would also appreciate a diagram, I've replaced the motors, greesed up the traks and replaced the swithches and there still sslow. TIA

If you still want to see the article, it is the Chevelle magazine put out by Super Chevy. They did the swap on an El Camino. Its a yearly publication, so it doesn't have a specific month. There is a picture of the cover in my photo album.

Mount the relay as close as possible to your +12V source-ideally the alternator charge post, or run it from a junction that runs to the charge post. On relay, get a standard 5-pin bosch style and #30 goes to +12V, #87 goes the the window motor itself, #85 is ground and #86 goes to the switch for the window. I would go 10 gauge size wire and you only need maybe a 20-amp fuse on the wire between #87 on the relay and the window lift motor. You can do the same thing for headlights, wiper motor, etc. -Jabin

anyone ever put a voltage meter to the factory relay? and see if there a voltage drop?
