I am looking for a better general understanding of the full function of the computer in the '87 Monte SS.

For some background, my project of just changing out the interior has evolved into a potential full rewire.
Reasons being;
1. This car has a 6.0L LS which is powered by a MSD standalone unit this negates any need for old computer controls in my mind
2. When removing the dash to paint it out I found many T-Tap type connectors in the steering column. All for a remote start and security system. I can't live with T-taps in the car so I need to pull that part our and replace it anyway.
3. The gauges have been replaced with a digital system that is fed directly from the individual modules in the engine; water temp, oil pressure, etc.
4. It seems MOST of the wires coming from the passenger side of the dash toward the driver side are now obsolete computer wires so if they arent being used I would love to yank them.

Summary question is does the computer only control the old original motor functions or is there another function that would still power this modified car?

I am debating buying a new Painless or Ron Francis harness and block and just doing it all over to eliminate what seems to be an abundance of unused wires.

Thank you

remove the complete computer harness from the bulkhead on the fire wall you may want to use the plug in the bulkhead to wire the ls

Thank you. I bought the electrical supplemental manual to try and trace and identify each wire coming out of the computer and what it was for. I think my route will be removal of all cruise control, emmission control items that are no longer applicable to the self contained LS motor. I do not think I will be going full re-wire as all of the kits arent vehicle specific and my main harness is in good shape. I will most likely be de-pinning and re-stringing the harness that have be cut into with T Taps and just replace wire for wire where damage has been done.
No better time to do it than now with the dash out.

The electrical supplement is excellent. Chiltons and Haynes were garbage for wiring diagrams and electrical components.

Here lately the 88 electrical supplement has been going for less than $10 shipped on ebay. I bought the manual and supplement when I got my car but have bought 2 extra supplements recently. I also recommend the chevrolet manual that the supplement goes with.
