So my remote drivers side mirror control made a snap noise and now is inop and mirror is very loose.
Before I take the door panel apart is there any chance of me repairing it or does it need a another mirror assembly?

If I recall, there are three wires in there that control the mirror adjustment, you'll be lucky if anyone has a fix!!

My experience with other vehicles with electric remote mirrors (not Montes) is take it apart and be prepared for the worse. Maybe something is off it’s track, but Have the parts ready to replace and if you don’t need them, just return as long as it’s not used. Another option is take it apart before you buy to assess, but taking it apart is a ideal first step. Keep us updated

It is not an electric remote mirror.
It has the cables that move the mirror from a lever on the driver door panel.
Something mechanically failed at the lever or mirror and it no longer works and the mirror is very loose.

Before I get into the door I wanted to know if anyone else has repaired one or if it needs a new assembly if I can find one.

Scott not an easy fix but can be done.
When a 16 year old kid took the driver door mirror off the door of my 86 it took not a lot of money but a lot of aggravation to repair the damage.
First thing i did was call Mike's Monte and buy a used working condition mirror with the cable. Be aware the early, pre 85 I believe and 86 and newer use a different mirror location, and possible a different mirror housing. Mike would be able to source you the correct mirror for your year car.

The damage on my car was to the door sheetmetal, mirror mounting bolts/studs were pulled right out of the mirror housing. The mirror glass was destroyed and the cable internals of the mirror destroyed also. This because when the kid sideswiped the mirror it stayed connected to the cable, the entire assemble swung upward and forward and destroyed the reveal trim and put a small dent in the fender. Yep, I was pissed.

So, i bought a complete used mirror from Mike, stripped my original mirror to just it's casting, repaired the two mounting studs, repainted it with Duplicolor, gutted the mirror I got from Mike, removed it's mirror glass and trashed the threw the housing from Mike in my saved parts box for hopefully not later, bought a new replacement mirror glass, then installed everything into my refurbished original housing.

Once I had spent many hours fixing/painting the dent/fold created by the crash in that section of door, replaced the damaged reveal molding the remanufactured mirror was reinstalled. 11 years ago and all is still fine.

i'll send you a couple pic of the mirror internals so you know what the guts look like. There are three steel cable running from the mirror glass mounting plate down to interior toggle to adjust the mirror. My guess is one of the cables has broken and this free up the other two to be free floating.

Start at the interior side of that cable, the toggle, and make sure that end is still good. If i recall the toggle adjuster is all diecast and the cable attachment would be hard to fix.
On the outside mirror internals they are plastic, three screws hold that adjusting assemble to the inside of the mirror.

Points of failure usually are the cable control assembly, and potentially the base behind the mirror itself, if one of the cables snapped it’s most likely not repairable

As a temporary redneck repair:
Option1: roll duct tape inside out, fold it and tuck it to hold the mirror in a usable angle.
Option 2: wooden clothespin, take it apart, make extra notches on inside of ‘legs’ and push into place on opposite sides, cut leftover w wire cutters, use a black sharpie to color the wood. Make notches slightly less than the thickness of the mirror, snug is better.

Does anyone know if these cables are common on certain cars ? I’ve seen aftermarket’s available for the bullet mirrors and f bodies. If so I’m wondering if I can buy a cheap aftermarket and just swap the good cable to my existing one?
