Hello everyone,
Been several years since I have really been on here much less posted. I have been quite busy with it lately. I finally took the time this year to do the total body restoration that it needed. I had a set of rust free doors I got off of a member here years ago in my shed along with a rust free trunk lid and a decent fender from another member on the board. I tore into it knowing that I was gonna go full tilt on it down to the bare metal and work my way from there. I found that the back driver side opera window had a rust hole under it and there was a few spots that were weak along both sides of the drip rails ( as seen in the pics). I needed a new windshield as mine was really scratched up. So, I had this one taken out and I am glad that I did. As I found out that the front passenger a pillar was hiding a huge nasty rust hole under it (see pic).
Other than those spots there wasn't any other rust areas except the entire roof. When I stripped it I found that the last shop had just painted over the checked lacquer paint. This resulted in the entire roof having surface rust and pitting.

The rest of the car was just stripping grinding, and a whole lot of block sanding. I shaved the antenna and went with one in the new windshield. I also, smoothed the little squares at the bottom of the front fenders and flush welded them. I don't know why GM put those indented anyways. We welded all the holes in the fenders and doors and quarters where all the chrome trim and rivets were. The biggest issue was having to weld metal to the passenger door edge to close the horrendous gaps that GM didn't bother to care about. Plus, I had to shim the front core support to close the top of the fender to door gap. That created another issue with the front bumper cover fitting. I had to take out all of the front bumper support shims to the the front to fit right. Man, I don't know what GM was thinking on some of this.

We sprayed 4 coats of primer on it and blocked the entire car 4 times with guide coats. My shoulders were about to fall off along with my achy back. When it finally went into paint we sprayed it in stages. We sprayed the jams and the trunk area first. Then we sprayed the body with doors hung. Lastly the rest of the panels were sprayed separately. Seemed like it wasn't ever gonna be all sprayed. The last part was spraying all the chrome and trim in epoxy then a semi flat black with a satin clear coat to resemble the factory flat trim look. I also sanded and cleared the rear taillights with a bit of black paint in the clear to give it a bit of a tinted look. I loved the way it came out with the 2019 Mercedes Mystic Blue, it has a deep blue look in the sun and at night it takes on a deep purple almost black look. Sorry for the long post and this is gonna be pic heavy.

Eric good to see you still have the car and man that's a lot of work to make it pretty again. And love the color, if i was to go to all that trouble you did my car would also be a deeeeeeep blue.

Are you still in the Corp?

Thanks, alot of hard work. Felt like a couple of times I was about to give up. But, I pushed through. I was torn between a bright silver or the blue. Almost leaned towards black but there alot of black ones.

No, I retired from the Corps in 2016. Just enjoying life now and driving the car around. Took it to it's first car meet and got alot of attention from it.

Great job Eric! I couldn't imagine how many hours are involved in disassembly, sanding, fixing, priming, blocking, blocking, and more blocking, before that final beautiful blue went down. Looks like glass - excellent outcome!

Thanks, there were alot of hours in blocking and fitting for sure. I just wanted it to be as straight as possible. I haven't done any body work since like 2000. So, I was pretty excited at how straight and flat it came out.
