i used to go by gimpymcss pre 2005. did a full rebuild of a 86 and totaled it to buy another with 40k miles that i still have 18 yrs later. just before the lockdowns had just gotten it back from a bunch of work & tune up had a overheating incident. was low on coolant thinkin maybe my mechanic forgot to top it off? seen no leaks or puddles, topped it off kept goin then the lockdowns came as well as other things and didnt start driving again till mid sept from late feb. few wks later happened again, didn't show up on the dipstick (maybe cuz oil was new), topped it off then happened again thankgiving week 20'. sent it to my mechanic to figure it out. he drained out the oil and some in a jar. found the coolant in the oil. he said never seen it hide so well & the crank case was filled to the brim.

originally was gonna be a headgasket change and when the heads were pulled cyl 4 was totally trashed & 305 not salvageable. rest of the car is in perfect/partial survivor no rust, 70k miles, most paint is orig & dusty, trans is fine and no mods till now. bought a new gm crate L05 for heavy duty trucks with down low tq 4000 rpm that i figure should work great around the streets with stock converter & 3.73s. i'm supposed to get it back this week.

deleted all emissions, ac & ecm. delco vac advance dist & a electric choke regular 750 Qjet with a speedmaster intake. bought all parts off amazon except the eng which i bought from pace performance for about 2900.00. i think it was on sale, not the greatest long block but a dynamite short block. steel crank, 4bolt & 1 piece rear main. i plan on keeping the car as close to how it came off the factory line as possible, dont want a fire breathing show car.

i got some exhaust questions cuz that's going to be next up. if anyone has questions ask and i'll do my best to answer.

Welcome back. Sounds like a nice project. If there was nothing wrong with the computer, carb, and dizzy you could have used them on the L05 and saved a few bucks, putting that towards the exhaust. Don’t throw any of that away if it was all OK as you should be able to sell them to those looking for a good CCC system.

Check out Brent’s 305 build as he talks about his fitment trials and tribulations with his exhaust system. Should prove helpful. Although if you’re not going to be running AC and can do away with the suitcase on the firewall schoenfeld headers are about as good for the money that you can get nowadays.

Original owner of 1985 SS black hardtop w/gray interior. Frame-on restoration in progress. 406 sleeper w/ heavily ported FIRST TPI. 1.875" headers and dual 3.5" Borla exhaust. unfortunately its not a project as much as it is my daily driver. i think i remember you back in the early 2000s. lol i sold clutch grabwell (i think it was) my 8.5 from my other car. the mechanics made the decision to delete the computer controls and didn't call to say so. only reason i didn't want to do that originally was the converter but would have had not been for that. i found the b&m lockup box to solve that, as for the money it wasn't that big of deal and i will be keeping the carb and other stuff.

headers is off the table to never be put on. lol good to see some of you are still here from the old days.
