Looking at swapping a 6.2 into a 85 Monte and wondering what are the best automatic trans options are , what kind of money am I looking at to have a shop do this kind of swap and what kind of money am I looking at to have this done ?

I did my LS3 swap in my garage over a period of 6 months. Holley has all bolt in pieces to make it easy.
4L80E is the best trans but mine works well as long as I dont beat on it too much.

Well the skies the limit. You can spend as much as you want. But do your research on the shop a lot of them will say yes and take advantage and take your money. My project is the 87 monte carlo aero ls3/6l80 swap and the shop doing mine is doing an excellent job they put 150 hours into the swap as of now. Most put the 4l65 or 4l80 into the ls3 swaps. Cost depends on used or new, GM performance sells connect and cruise packages with warranties, which is the direction I went. Everything is installed and they are building the exhaust. Final work will be the electric wiring and first startup. I am not sure I gave you what you wanted to know mine is on the high end for the most part. Just do your research and use a reprable shop that has done ls3 swaps my shop has done many.

One other point to consider is emission testing. White City, Oregon appears to be near Medford which requires emission testing. The LS swap wont pass an Oregon emissions visual test. Oregon shops may not agree to preform a swap if it is considered illegal.

The only emission legal LS swaps are the Erods from GM.

Thank you for all the input I’ll be doing the swap but everything I do is off road builds and ls engines I want to be fair to my customer as well as not short my self on estamites prob go with a 48loe and a Holley system as I’m familiar with those check us out on any social media platform to see our racing program 😀

I too have the 4L65e, although it bolted to an LS2. I don't feel like I have abused the tranny but I do romp on it on occasion and it has help up just fine after 5 years.

Mine works great except for the feel of the 2-3 upshift..like some slop or slip..maybe it needs programing or something.

I took my Monte to have the shift points changed. I really disliked how the transmission shifted through all 4 gears by 30 or 35 MPH. It made the engine bog down some in 4th gear. I need to take it back and have them tweak the settings, at least the 1-2 shift. Its shifts at around 3K RPM. If you're doing some moderate to spirited driving then it's all good but if driving around the neighborhood...

Maybe having the transmission controller adjusted? Or maybe we should just replace our trannies with a Tremec 5 or 6 speed!

What do I need to get my factory tach working with my ls swap?

If you have a good tuner, I'm pretty sure you can adjust the tach output to give the correct signal. I had an aftermarket tach that had to be switched to 4 cylinder mode to read correctly, but I believe I remember the ECM has the ability to change the output as well.
