CELEBRATING 20 YEARS!

Runs great for about one hour .Then it quits and won't start sounds and act like it out of time. Then it sits for a few hours and then it starts and runs great. Only has 41,000 miles on it. Need any help.

Everything original? 305/2004r? Any trouble codes or dash lights on?

I don't want to tell you wrong so I will wait for others to come in. It might take a little while, forum doesn't get much traffic but when it does lots of people that are knowledgeable. If it was a code I might be able to help. Going off what you said above first thing I would look at is the coil but might be a complete dead end.

Does the car have spark and fuel when it doesn't start? If no spark,I would guess the pickup in the distributor. My 86 has a module and pickup,but the 88 system is a little different due to having a external coil. I've had some other cars ( not Monte Carlos) that had the same symptom as you and it was the stator (pickup) in the distributor. If it was my 86,I'd start with a module and stator,but first you should do some diag. On a car with a external coil (a two wire coil),a test light can be used to verify a good stator. One side should be hot and the other should pulse during crank. If the pulsing side is erratic,i'd guess a bad stator (pickup). Being a 1988 I think those had a external coil and not a internal one like my car.

Thanks we found out the the distributor had a crack and the rotor button was bad. Thanks guys really appreciated the help.

Welcome to the BEST site on the net. Has the car ever had a complete tune up, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, along with the gas filter in the carb?? Now would be a good time to take care of the rest of the work. Good luck!!
