hey guys what is a good way to adjust my rockers. i have the original 305 when i did it on my cutlass years back i just ran it without my covers and snugged them until it quietened up but with this car i have to remove my ac compressor and bracket to remove my cover so i didnt want to run it like that if i didnt have to i replaced my valve seals on the drivers side next weekend im going to do the other side. i spun the motor by hand and adjusted them till there was no play for now but now it has a slight misfire so im assuming they are too tight . on the good side I didn't get cloud of smoke when i started it lol just a little puff . ans fyi its a pain doing it with rope wish my compressor worked lol .thanks in advance

On a old school SBC with somewhat stock cam the simplest way to do it is this method. In most of the old Motors or Chiltons Manuals that was the method prescibed. Several other methods but that should work for you.

Not sure how much preload you should put on the lifter after zero lash has been set, been a long time since playing with a 305. But would think factory was 3/4 to 1 turn. Most of the aftermarket parts would be closer to 1/4 preload.

I like the opposites of the firing order method .works the best for me .ensures your on the "heel" of the cam .

a half turn is fine, no need to readjust that side!!
