And also be aware that you can't compare a company's today tool quality with the tool made 15 years ago. I have old Porter Cable tools, battery drills made in Switzerland, recip saws (Porter Cable and Milwaukee) belt sander, palm sander, Skil drills, made in USA. Most ALL, including Craftsman, even Snap On have moved some if not all of their production to the "over seas". It irritates me when I go shopping for tools and can't find virtually any Made In USA. Pretty much all have moved production to overseas. I shop flee markets and swap meets for old tools these days.
But it's the same for most everything today, car parts bought from 4 different "companies", same part in different box and price. One corp owns all the labels.

The epoxy floor was finished today.... now I have to wait 4 to 5 days for full cure before I get to move anything in. I think it looks great! The second coat of polyurethane is still wet in the pics.

Looks fantastic! I like the color and spec pattern you went with.

I know it hurt to write that check but trust me, you will be SO happy that you did it now and did it right. Congrats...

Ok, so the floor is now fully cured. I need some advice. That 'wet' look in the final image above never went away. The top coat finish is not uniform.. i.e. you can see the application strokes. Is this normal? They put two coats of polyurethane on top. Leo, did yours look like this? Frank, they ground it with a diamond sander to prep it before the epoxy went down.

Here's what the finish currently looks like:

Hi Paul,

I'm thinking that just like any glossy finish, it probably comes down to lack of uniformity in the thickness of the clear coat, and/or lack of uniformity of texture in the surface of the substrate. Another possibility is that the PU cured way too fast so that it didn't have time to flow and level before curing.

In theory, more coats of clear should solve all of the foregoing. But, whoever applies the clear should take extra care to ensure the viscosity and vapor pressure of the solvent are properly adjusted for temperature. If in doubt, calibrate it for 10 deg F or so above anticipated, to give some extra margin for self-leveling before curing.

HTH?

Thx,
MAP

Thanks Leo / Mark. I've spoken with the contractor who did the work. He's on vacation at the moment but offered to put more PU coats on to see if that will solve the problem. He'll be back on the 8th. I'll be sure to pass along the information about proper prep of the solvent so it doesn't cure too fast. Stay tuned... gotta wait over a week.

Sucks that I can't move stuff in for a while.. but I did drive the SS into the shop for the first time today. That's a start! Sure looks nice in there!

Love it!
I agree if you can swing it get a package unit heat pump for in there. I have a 3 ton unit in my 28x54 garage. It keeps in comfortable in the Florida heat, i have no insulation with a tin roof.
Package units are great as they are self contained outside. I have the return right inside the garage at 1 end then duct running down the center starting at 12" round and dropping down a size every 10',
I have a 75 amp service in mine and do have to turn off the air to run the compressor but i am also running 26 - 3 tube 4' fluorescent fixtures. I am in the process of converting the fixtures to LED so once thats done i may be ok running both at once as long as i not welding also.

Hi Paul,

My answer to "enough space?" is "no," since you haven't parked a 747 next to your MCSS just yet. smile

Best,
