Has anyone sent a set of the Year One N90s to have widened? Hoping to see a set on the back sitting at 9.5. I would love to see a full set at 9 or 9.5!

Thinking about throwing some stripes back on the Aero this year, but only if I get some N90s.

Do it....

I would call Weldcraft and see if they have ever done a set. My gut says it hasn't been done.

I was seriously considering doing this. I haven't called them myself, but I do see where they have done a lot of cast wheels for the mustang crowd and haven't seen any negatives about their work - at least up until the point I decided against it.

The -6 stock offsetting is perfect for the front and works great for rotating a squared tire package. That said, adding width to the wheel happens on the backside, meaning you're going to be adding backspacing.

For a stock frame, it appears a 9.5" with 5" backspacing (-6) seems to be the norm when fitting a 275/40/17 on the Montes, which is a -6 offset. Mine with the notched frame, 9" rear w/disk brakes needs a +6 offset to center the wheel. For me, that means I could add an inch to the N90s to give me a 9" wide wheel, which is the min width recommended on the 275/40/17s ET Streets S/S.

Adding.....Width.......Total................Backspacing....offset
Stock.......8.00.........9.00.........4.75.........4.25.........-6.00
0.50.........8.50.........9.50.........4.75.........4.75.........0
0.75.........8.75.........9.75.........4.75.........5.00.........3
1.00.........9.00.........10.00.......4.75.........5.25.........6
1.25.........9.25.........10.25.......4.75.........5.50.........9
1.50.........9.50.........10.50.......4.75.........5.75.........12

You're criteria might be different than mine, but I tend to push my cars pretty hard at times and there's going to be an occasional visit to the drag strip and maybe a local parking lot autocross (just for fun). I may end up with dedicated wheel/tires for the track but regardless, I did not want to run adapters (bolt on spacers) and really didn't want to run spacers on the rear - although with good spacers and extended studs it really shouldn't be an issue.

From what I could find, shipping back and forth and labor for 2 would be around $500 and with a set of 17" N90s going for around $1,000 delivered, we're talking around $1,500 and I can get a set of custom offset wheels with a staggered 17/18 package that I kinda like (LOL) that would let me take full advantage of the frame notch and lip work already done on the car for $1650.

Anyway, hope the offset chart helps.

However the 1.875" headers, 3.5" duals, TH400, Ford 9", notched frame, and 10-point cage w/swing-out bars might tip you off it's not a lil' ole 305 TPI. Other mods: 2" drop, 18" wheels, f/r disk brakes, and custom stereo system.

I have the 17" N90's now and have actually asked Year One owner Kevin King about the possibility of making a 9 inch version......request denied. So it's up to an end owner to modify them.

BadSS: Love the chart, thanks for the visual. The only thing I could add is Year One will run free shipping, you could have them shipped directly to Weldcraft to eliminate one of the bills.

That said, if I did a set all 4 would get done in order to run 275's all the way around. 9 inch wheel would have 5.25 BS, not bad at all. Very tempting, but costly.

Do it Bradshaw, then when you decide you must have pizza pan sized brakes and need to upgrade to larger diameter wheels.......let me know. wink

This has been done, by weld craft.

There’s a turbo elcamino build on ls1tech where the owner sent the 17” n90 wheels to weld craft and had them widened. I asked him about them but can’t temper the cost, I’ll do some digging and try to find the thread.

well I found this at the right time, I have been thinking the same thing for my 17" N90's.Contacted Weld craft and Jim told me $215.00 per wheel for 1'' to 3'' and there is a 7 to 8 week turn around. I am thinking shipping is on us also? I was going to do the frame notch so I could get a wider tire out back. But what about the inner fender panel(rear) seems to be on the inside a little? Will it be ok or does it have to be modded / mini tubbed to fit a 275 back there? Do I need the notch for that size? The other option ( and cheaper ) is to buy a set of wheels , like the ralley steels 15x9 with 4.5 back space and mount the Mickeys SS DR 275x 60 15 for the nights when I need them?

I searched on Ls1tech and couldn't find said elco, would really like to see pics of those wheels. Price will put me out of the market to widen a set.

275 fit as is. Some guys have made 295 fit but may have rolled the other lip or cut it. I ran 275 for years.

Come on Brian. It is just money!

You really can't blame Year One, the market to engineer, manufacture and sell wider 17" N90's would not justify the cost.

I had also looked into the wider N-90s and thought to buy them and then ship them to get them widened at Weldcraft. A significant problem with wide wheels is the diverse needs of the many likely users for specific and different backspacing. Each car and rear configuration (real/axle, brake set up, tubbing, frame notched) creates a specific backspace need which means a new SKU, and the inventory issues and manufacturing set up for limited/selective sales becomes huge. Add to this alternative bolt patterns. Having gone through a lot of searching to get 10" stuffed under the back of the Aero (stock axles/brakes but tubbed and notched), I found that the limited wheels out there typically had much larger backspacing, sort of a starting point for modifieds. So I used spacers/adapters to push the wheels back out (in my case 7.27" BS reduced to to 6.02"). Also, I bought the wheels/spacers with the intent to dry mount them (no tires) and confirm fit would work before committing. If not confident, I could return them which would not be possible with the N-90s modified. Much cheaper too... Still, the widened N-90s are a wonderful mod. Keep us posted.

Haven't pulled the trigger yet. I wrestle with this idea every time I look at the car. I know different wheels would be cheaper, but I so love the N90.

Not sure, I was talking with Ken the other day about something unrelated and saw he offers widening>

I would imagine pretty reasonable, everything else on his site is.
