I'm at a decision crossroad, should I sell or scrap stock parts removed from my Monte Carlo? In particular is a stock 7.5" open 10 bolt diff that I removed from my car. It is a trip hazard on my garage floor and I have no place to store it. It is almost too heavy for me to move and I don't feel like crating and shipping it. I've had no interest on Craigslist except for the usual scammers.
I think I can get a few dollars for it by dragging it down to the scrap metal dealer. Too bad it's not an 8.5". What would you do? My car is not returning to stock.

Being that scrap prices are in the dumper you might break even, gas verses a couple bucks. Unfortunately getting rid of stuff laying around is necessary.
Not much resale value in the G-body 7 1/2 unless your you are someone who needs it TODAY.

I've just put all of my stock parts on craiglist as free to a good home. Figure some poor kid broke his 7.5 doing burnouts and needs one haha

Youd be surprised at what people will pay for stuff. I just sold a stock 7.5 open diff for 100 bucks... and I was only asking 75, guess Im just a good salesman.

I think Craigslist is dying. Facebook groups and their marketplace is where its at.

I've sold about 5-6 3.73 open 7.5"s out of SS's and they've usually sold pretty quick, in the $150 range, sometimes I've taken a little less. What do you have it priced at? Surely you'd be way ahead in time/money by selling it for even $50-100 than hauling it in (time/heavy) for scrap. I scrapped a 98-02 f-body rear end a couple years ago, just the housing after I took the brakes off and also gears/carrier, I think I got under $10 for it, I forget what scrap was at the time. I guess even selling it for $20-25 would beat scrap and maybe make someones day as it would be a nice gear upgrade for a base model g-body. Rather see the parts being used by someone than melted down if they are still perfectly fine.

I'd also say Facebook marketplace is taking a big share of what Craigslist is/was. I haven't kept track but think I might be buying/selling more items on there than CL at this point.

Good suggestion about FB Marketplace, Craigslist seems so dark and suspicious, I'm afraid to use it. I too would like to see it go to a good home rather than destroy something that isn't made anymore. I'll post it for $50 and keep you updated on my success. The trouble with posting it for free is a scrap metal scrounger will pick it up and then collect $25 for disposing it. I can do that if necessary.
Regional issues may be at work too, I will bet there are only about a dozen G-bodies left in Northern Nevada, other areas of the nation may have more of them.

Gear ratio would be a factor somewhat and location for sure like you said. Here $50 any rear would sell quick, dirt track guys or someone who just wants a housing would pay that I'd say. For 3.73 gears that should get more interest. Selling a rear end in that price range shouldn't bring out too many shady weirdo's, most people are normal but there are some oddballs on CL and FB in my experience, like anywhere in life.

When the 8 1/2 went in the car 15 years ago sold the open rear drum to drum for a 100 bucks, met the kid 1/2 way for the delivery.
When the 305 got pulled donated the engine to a good cause. A 16 year old girl got it transplanted into a 60s Vette. Father passed and friend's thought she didn't need what dad had in it for now.
The 200R was sold for a hundred bucks, it was fresh. Going in a 57 Studebaker.

My brother is a scraper, retired and that helps him pass the time. It doesn't bother with steel, cast iron, only the non-ferrous stuff. He said prices took a good hit recently. Steel price has been low for a while, nothing like when I drove an empty E 150 to the crusher and got $530, it was even missing a fender. I would think 2-4 bucks a hundred pounds right now, rear is less than 200 lb.

Collecting parts removed from our cars always ends up taking up space. My original hood is leaning in the corner of my daughter's garage. The 700R from an 88 IROC, the 350 long block from my 72 Chevelle SS, the TH350 from the Caprice, 95% of the 86 suspension, fuel system, all got loaded on a truck for scrape. Just got tired of stuff with no good intentions laying around. That made room for all the other stuff I do use, like 10 wheel/tires for the car.

It's always best to find a new home for stuff, good old stuff is getting hard to find.

For what it is worth, I just made a scrap metal run last week to clean up around the yard and garage and got only 5 cents a pound.

This is in the Northern New England region, very close to the deep water ports that ship scrap steel overseas.
I knew the price wasn't going to be high, but holy smokes it cost me most of that in gas roundtrip to take it there.
I guess I'm in favor of giving non-special car parts away for free now! At least they might get used for their intended purpose instead of being shredded and melted down.

It's done, I sadly parted with the 160lb (a $9.50 windfall) rear axle at the scrap metal recycler. Not a peep from anyone on Facebook Marketplace.

At least you get a nice meal from McDonald's with the profits from the sale...
I'd have taken it off your hands for you if there wasn't 3000 miles worth of driving to get it. But given the circumstances, I don't blame you for taking the pennies and being done with it. I'm sitting on a decent bit of aluminum waiting on prices to go up a little more. Mostly water pumps and a couple bent rims, also some copper and cast iron. I've got the space where it doesn't bother me though. Different story when it takes up area you need for working.

Sometimes you just need a bigger hammer...

'85 MC with budget 5.3L swap, TH350 with stock 2.14 rear end
It ain't much off the line, but it's nice on the highway

Crazy that no one would of taken it for cheap. Even a non desirable gear ratio rear end if complete would get grabbed by someone.
