Oh sorry it’s a 1988 SS . The thermostat housing has 2 sensors in the top of it

Those aren't for the gauge. There is something resembling the head of a medium sized nail poking out of the side of the block. That is the temp sensor for the gauge

one is for the computer temp sensor for it to go into closed loop so you can achieve lock up with your converter and so the O2 sensor can adjust the fuel trim, the other is usually a thermal vacuum switch for the EFE(heat riser) valve.

As Leo correctly stated, the two senders on the thermostat housing are a temperature sender for the ECM and a vacuum thermoswitch that is part of the emissions system.

The L69 CCC engine used two temperature senders. The sender in the thermostat is exclusively for the ECM. The sender for the instrument cluster gauge is between cylinders #1 and #3 (front of engine), on the driver's side.

If your wire is cut off like mine was, dig through the harness to find the clipped wire. Then splice a few more feet on. Does not require a special connector. Can twist the wire on to sensor head and get reading. I'd find a connector of some sort though.

What if you have done away with the ccc do you still have to use a thermostat housing with the 2 openings or can you put a regular one on there?

If you have ALL the CCC system removed, and emissions equipment, then you won't need either of the two thermostat fittings (ECM temp sender and ported vacuum switch). You could use a thermostat housing with no holes at all. But, if you are still using the factory distributor and ECM with an aftermarket carb, the temperature sender is still needed for the system to go into closed loop. It would still have issues with not having feedback from the Q-Jet, but at least you would get some ignition advance.

Thanks ChasUno for the advice I have new distributor, new carb, new intake. Where or how do I get it to read temp gauge is there a spot on the 305sbc for a temp sensor?

Left side of engine (drivers side) on cylinder head between #1 &3 exhaust ports. Find a dark green wire, that will be for OEM dash temperature gauge.
