I was lucky enough to find a low mileage (28,000 miles) 1988 SS car from Texas a couple of months a go. No rust, other than just a very small amount on the corner of each door and scale underneath. The car has some very minor dents on the drivers side door, where it looks like someone leaned on the car consistently over the years. That is my guess any way. The paint is thin in a few areas from all of the years of polishing, as such it will need a re-spray. It also looks like one of the previous owners put 85-86 decals on it. I have to say, I actually like how those look better.

So being a child of the 80's, I always loved the look of the Maroon Monte Carlo cars from that time, however always loved the power of the turbo Buick Grand National. With this build I am going to try to combine the best of both of my likes. I am going to remove the 305 in the Monte and replace with a new crate engine 350 with twin turbos. Getting a new radiator and going with a 700R4 trans. Also getting new disc brakes all around and installing some lowering springs to drop the car 1.5" to 2". I am aiming to keep the rest of the car stock. The interior is immaculate and has never been smoked in. The original radio was at one point removed and replaced with a single DIN. I am going to replace that with the original looking RetroSound NEW-264-269-660, only with modern technology like Bluetooth, etc.

Here is how she sits as now

Looks like a great starting point, clean car! Interesting choice to use the 85/86 decals by the PO, looks like it had headlight covers at one point too.

Welcome to the board.
Looks good, and sounds like a plan!

Sometimes you just need a bigger hammer...

'85 MC with budget 5.3L swap, TH350 with stock 2.14 rear end
It ain't much off the line, but it's nice on the highway

Nice clean car. Good luck with the build.

Unless you're hellbent on a 350 for nostalgic 80's reasons, I'd strongly suggest you look into a 6.0L LS based motor with a 4L80e.

In the case of forced induction you'll be in a much better starting point cost wise with an LS based motor. 9.4-1 compression, aluminum heads. Fuel Injection from the factory.

Even if you do decide to go with a 350, for the power levels you'd be looking at twin turboed, a 700R4/4L60 is not the trans you want for those power levels.. 2-3 shift will be mush at WOT. even rebuilding the stock 200-4r for power is a better choice.

Thank You for the advice. I am using the 350 as I have it on hand and purchased for an amazing price. Also there is a little 80's nostalgia there too, as this car is built in a way I wish GM would have made a Monte to compete with a Grand National back at that time. I chose the 700R4 as I have one on hand and it is being re-built currently. We have a Good shop in town which does this and we are having him re-build using the heavy duty option he offers. I will try it and if over time this trans annoys me, I will try something different.

Don't forget to keep the stock parts, that's a clean survivor and you might want to go back to stock some day. Stock and original is generally worth more when you sell.
BTW, those door dents are from a someone using their body to close a partially shut door. Stubborn door closing is often caused by sagging hinges which causes a misalign at the door striker. Then some fat ash tries to close the door all he way by pushing on the door panel. Shameful abuse by careless people. My car had those dents too.

my kids keep trying to make those dents. No you don't need a running start to close the door...

Nice car

I prefer the 86 stripes so I might consider that option when I repaint my 88. It does hurt my brain a little to think of 86 stripes on an 88 though.

I think its more weird he swapped stripes on a sub 30k car more so then that somebody would change them.

As we wait for parts to come in, we started to sand it down and prepare for the re-spray today

Very nice pallet to start with.
As you prep the car for paint don't forget it's lacquer originally.

Umm...wait a minute-how bad was the OE finish? I'm surprised you "getting at it" paintwise when it looked pretty damn good in the pics you posted.

Not Great and there we several small dents throughout, especially on the doors. Speaking of the doors, there were some small rust spots on the corners, about the size of nickel as well. I want to fix those properly.
