Hello I am new to the forum. Joined to get information on a 200 4R transmission that was in an 86 Monte SS. I am trying to figure out what this is. There is no ID plate and the trans is painted black. So far this is what I found. It has a green driver speedo gear. I think it is 10 tooth gear with a brown 30 tooth driven gear. The TC was painted grey and had a 5 with part of a circle on the shell between every blade pockets. Does this sound like it is a SS trans. Thanks in advance.

I read somewhere on this site that if you take pan off, that the valve body has either pink or purple paint on it (unless its worn off), and should also have a code on it. HTH.

The SS had a D5 stamped into the torque converter.

If the tag is gone and repainted, good chance it was rebuilt and who knows what parts could of been changed if so. Sounds like it has the D5 convertor though. I thought the brown gear is for a different number/ratio, I believe I have one and that it is for a 3.08 rear(26 tooth?) but that is off my memory. IIRC a blue 30 tooth was for 3.73's. There must be a few sites out there that break this down.

Hello and thanks for all the replies. The speedo gear was was brown and it had 30 stamped in it. I also counted the teeth three times and came up with 29 once and 30 twice. This gear was brown with a metal shaft.

My valve body had the code (cz) on it. Take the pan off and see if there's a code on it.

Here's a couple of pics of the valve body from my CZF code 200-4R. (Ignore the red arrows, they were for an issue I was having)

Where in the pictures?
From what I understand the letters are on the side of the valve body.

Mine was in large white letters right on the side of the valve body casting. I don't have a pic, but you can't miss it if it's there.

I think the next step is to pull off the pan. I am worried what I will find. The guy I bought from said there was a a coloured stripe in the valvebody. I have to confirm this. He also said it would shift at 5200 RPM. Like PB86SS said, "If the tag is gone and repainted, good chance it was rebuilt and who knows what parts could of been changed"

Yeah pull the pan and see if there is a letter code. The other thing is if it shifts good why worry? Are you using a "stock" 305? My gut feeling, being it looks like a D5 converter you have an SS trans that was rebuilt.
