I was fortunate enough to have acquired my 87 ss without the license plate screwed right the bumper cover. For a while I had it zip tied to the grill. The two problems with that are 1: It is really ugly and primitive, and 2: I almost lost it coming home from a day trip one day. It was barely hanging on by one zip tie. So I finally decided to make my own plate bracket. I got a cheap aluminum baking sheet from target and trimmed and bent it to fit the plate and around the bumper cover. I drilled 2 holes to mount the plastic plate inserts for the security screws, 2 holes to bolt it on the backside of the bumper cover using 2 of the chin spoiler bolts, and 2 larger holes to pass a socket through to access the bolts.[Linked Image]

Nice! I need to do this as I've already been pulled over twice for not having the front plate on the "furthest extremity of the vehicle".

I got pulled over just a couple of months after I had the car by a freaking transit cop. He stopped my just because of the front plate. It was still sitting in the back seat and I explained the significance of not drilling the holes. He didn't seem to care and told me to zip tie it and have a nice day. lol

I have mine on the dash, propped up against the windshield....evidently not good enough.

Not sure I'd blame cops for a "front plate sitting on the dash" violation. The G-Bodies in general are profiled by law enforcement as high theft targets and there was a time not long ago when street gangs used them to do drivebys and transport illicit substances in hidden compartments . Give a cop a reason to stop one and they will. I love El Paso, Texas but it is kinda close to the border...
Once the LEO sees you are not a criminal and not unlicensed and you are legally insured, registered, you should be on your way with little fuss and muss.
Stopping for no front plates is how cops do their job without violating your rights.
Just so you know, I also run without a front plate..and Nevada requires them. I fully expect to cooperate and apologize when and if I am stopped. Hands on the steering wheel at all times because I also CCW..
I always thought the motorized front plates are a cool idea.

You can't get closer to the border than El Paso, yet it is one of the safest cities in the US...year after year. That's sayin' something since Juarez is riddled with drug violence.
I still need to get that front plate mounted but I don't want to drill holes in to the bumper cover. This looks to be a great solution!
