I'm replacing the original (!) water pump on my '87. Should any RTV be used where the gaskets go (if nothing else, to help hold the gaskets in place during reinstallation). If so, which type? Also, is any thread sealer needed on the mounting bolt threads? (I'm not sure if any of the bolts for the water pump on this motor pass though a water jacket,) If so, what should be used? Thanks.

You're really not supposed to put any RTV on the gasket, but a little dab here and there to hold it in place probably won't hurt anything. I'd try to do it without any RTV myself.

Use Permatex High Performance Thread Sealant (part # 56521 or 56525) to seal the pump bolts. Pretty sure there is at least one of the bottom ones that hits the water jacket. Just put it on all of them.

Actually, I've also used Loctite 567 PST Thread Sealant with no problems if you happen to already have some of that.

i always put rtv on all my gaskets. i use the black. and use sealer on the bolts. if you havent bought the pump yet, I'd use a weiand team g, it's aluminum and has a larger
impeller.
