I posted a question in the quick chat box to the left from a computer but I cannot seem to access that same quick chat box from my phone and I will not be around a computer for some time now.

My question is if I still need my factory VSS system for a LS swap? I'm swapping in a 4.8/4l60e. the reason why i'm asking is because i'm a noob at this and I cannot for the life of me get the VSS part that connects to the rear of the transmission off

I've seen you asked this question on facebook, gbody forum & now here......the vss on your monte is located at the speedometer, what you think is the vss is actually a speedometer gear (inside the transmission), the 4l60e will not directly drive your stock speedometer, you will either need a speedometer convertor box (Dakota Digital or Cable X) or an electronic speedometer

yes! I wanna make sure I understand something 100% and get the most replies I can get before I really screw something up lol. I researched this a little deeper after posting this and I think I understand it now. I think I will go with the electronic speedo. thanks for the replies

What WV Hillbilly said, that is just the speedo driven gear and speedo cable. Some PB Blaster could help to remove that is in your picture, good luck!

Just in case, since you said "Plugs" into the transmission, the ribbed ring unscrews the normal way from the transmission housing, you can try a pair of good condition Channel-Lock pliers LIGHTLY gripping it to loosen it. Don't mangle it. the cable sticking out doesn't rotate, once the ring is loose it will slide straight out.
Leo's right as well, PB Blaster or your favorite similar product can help.

Sometimes you just need a bigger hammer...

It ain't much off the line, but it's nice on the highway

Save yourself some real headaches especially if you new to the LS swap community, and get the Dakota digital dash with the expansion module OBD-II / CAN Interface that connects directly into the obdii port for exact readings it's the best thing I've ever bought for my ls swap
