87 monte carlo SS with stock transmission.

I got the car from my dad who said I have to replace the transmission because when I'm shifting (the shifter) down from park, the gears will shift. To shift upward back to park I need to turn the plastic housing around the steering column. My neighbor said if I buy a holley shifter, it will fix the problem?

Curious if anyone can explain what's happening/how I might be able to fix this problem? Thank you!

Nice Sunny Hawaii
Just need to adjust the linkage. No need to buy new shifter. However, if you're looking for good excuse to buy non-stock shifter, this will be a good chance.

So I adjusted the linkage and everything lines up, but there's a lot of wiggle room... The car shifts down smoothy with column ( refuses to shift to 1 after 2 just doesnt budge )but when I try to upshift It feels like it just gives out and my floor shifter goes up without shifting the column shifter and I need to turn the column to get it back to park..Sometimes I'll get to reverse before the column stops turning... Any ideas what I need to fix?

It looks like the shift cable isn't being kept in the bracket at the trans, someone didn't do a good install or it's the wrong cable!!

Have it back in place properly now and my car is shifting! Thank you, must have missed it after I called it a day.

If you continue to have wiggle on the shifter, there are some little parts that can wear out.
There are 2 oval-shaped bushings that tend to break or wear out.
They are on the transmission, the selector lever has 2 slots where they fit in.
If you replace them put some grease where the shifter rod fits in.
(the bushings are green in these pics)
