If your just cruising, No. The stock shaft is fine for normal street driving. If you push the handling of your Monte, then Yes. Provides more accurate steering without the slop of the rag joint.

Thanks for the info. Fred, though I meant advantages/ disadvantages of the upgraded GM rubber isolator shaft vs the upgraded solid shaft. I should have read the whole thread as Ken did explain in a previous posting that the rubber isolator shaft is supposed to reduce vibration, but GM only supplied it for a year. I thought that maybe the rubber isolator shaft used rubber/ plastic bushings, hence being wary of them. It appears that that particular shaft might just use a chunk of rubber surrounding part of the shaft to absorb vibrations (please correct me if my assumption is incorrect.)

With regards to my OE rag joint, I came back from a drive recently and had noticed a knocking from the steering, plus a lot of steering slop noticeable at highway speeds. Grabbing the shaft by hand showed a lot of play, which indicates that the rag joint is shot. It was a no brainer to order one of these solid GM shafts, and I am looking forward very much to getting it fitted and tightening up the steering. It will be nice to take high speed bends on the interstate without my having my Monte not knowing when to actually start steering!

What a difference these make. All slop and drifting was gone after the install. Not even sure that I need to replace the tie rods and ball joints like the mechanic said now.

I need a solid shaft. Installed the isolator one and the isolator damn near touches my header tube. Credit card barely makes it inbetween them. Big block header goes around steering shaft. Let me now if any come available.
