I put about 50miles on my car without a trans lockup. She shifts fine, but now whines a little when throttle is engaged. Any ideas?

It seems to start in 2nd. Its like a flat piece of sheet metal getting vibrated from louf exhaust. It only does it when I give it gas, but not in neutral

I put around 50,000 miles on mine after the lockup quit working and never had a problem lol. I doubt the whine is related to that. Have you checked under the car for anything? Checked fluid level in trans?

Fluids are fine. Even trans fluid is fine. If it was trans fluid, it would shift like crap. What brought up fluids though? Did you think it was the oil pan or trans pan?

No I wouldn't think it was the pan, just to help rule things out. When my truck was low on trans fluid it shifted fine; but I could feel it slip a little. Book says it holds 5 qts when changing fluid it but it took 7 lol. I would just check everything under the car if it sounds like metal vibrating. Could be an exhaust hanger, dust cover on the trans, etc. If you're in neutral and slowly rev it does it make the sound at all? Maybe a certain RPM? At 1600 everything in my car rattles smile.

Nothing rattles out of the ordinary in neutral. Its such a strange noise. Almost like bolts setting on a piece of sheet metal and THAT getting vibrated

Bad86SS, if you place the car in Drive with the brakes applied and give it light throttle does the whine get louder? If you can get the TC to lock-up (while crusing down the highway) it'll help with the diagnosis. With the TC locked-up, the stator assembly spins at the same rate as the TC and you won't hear any bearing problems. The fact that you're not hearing a whine in Neutral is another indication of a bad stator bearing. Been there.

Probably not the trans. Been driving mine without lockup since I removed the computer and that was in 1995 with around 35K miles and no problems, Yet.

They guy who built the trans said theres a lockup already, just needs to be wired. I dunno how to tell though. Im not a trans guy. Matter of fact, im scared of transmissions cause of our TV cables. My TV cable fried a couple trannys (thank God for warranties)

.. The whine may have always been there, but you ignored it until looking for a problem...

.. The 3.73 rear of your SS lessens the need for locking the converter, compared to a 2.73 rear in an LS, since the converter spins a little faster and 'hydraullically locks' a little more at the higher cruising RPMs of an SS...

.. Check for bad, worn out rubber in the tranny to frame mount and engine mounts... (new ones are cheap) they would make the noise you describe... also, make sure headers/exhaust/mufflers have clearance not hitting anything... absolutely no slop in either U-joint of driveshaft... lugnuts tight in all 4 wheels...

I have this same problem, when the tranny is under load i hear a squealing noise. I was told it could be the tranny pump and since my pump was from the bone yard i dropped the tranny and had a shop put a new tci pump in for me. I put a new b&m converter on and was ready to put it back in. Then i read this post and i too am wondering you outcome... I was really hoping it was the pump.... but Now im unsure...

Check that heat shield on the passenger side floor too. Lots of things in these cars rattle at certain RPMs. The passenger side seat adjuster on mine rattles at a certain RPM. But when my th350 went, broke the stator someone told me, it whined like I had put a blower on the car until I lost all the gears in it. Unless you drive on the highway alot not having the lockup won't hurt it, since it don't lock up until 45mph anyway.
