Mannnnnn. So I dug into a wiring bundle, saw a bigger purple wire, snipped it, tried to start the Monte...It wouldn't start. So obviously I got the right wire to splice into right? Well I installed a 2 prong toggle switch to it, grounding one side to a ground I have for 2 other wires previously...connected the 2 sides of the purple wire to the one wire going into the toggle switch, with a fuse beforehand as well, and nada. I can start the car with the toggle on both sides, so wtf??? Someone please tell me what I did wrong.

Thank you!!

i'm a little confused as to how you wired it, but i think you mean to say you took a SPST switch and hooked one terminal to ground and cut the purple wire for the solenoid and attatched both ends to the other terminal of the switch to attempt to ground the circuit so the car wouldn't start correct?

why not just put the switch inline and install the purple wire on both terminals, one terminal coming from the switch, and one going to the solenoid. that way the car only starts with the switch in the on position.

I'm a little confused now myself. What's an SPST switch? I did ground one end, and took the purple wire that I cut, which now makes it 2 purple wires, and spliced them into a wire from the toggle switch.

If I read your post correctly, disregard the ground wire...and put the other purple wire onto the other side of the toggle switch?

You should really use a relay but a switch will work if it can handle the starter solenoid current. SPST is single pole single throw. Nothing gets connected to ground. If you only want to use a switch wire it up like this:

One end of the wire goes on the ground side of the switch, the other goes to the accessory side of the switch. The center of the switch I bet you're using is to make the switch light up when the accessory is turned on.

It's only got 2 terminals on it...Am I using the wrong type of toggle switch?

Your using it the wrong way, the purple wire should be the only wires going to the 2 terminals.

JMO,

If you are looking to set up a kill switch, I would suggest to interrupt ignition voltage instead of cranking. Like mentioned, there would be less electrical load on your add on.

Good idea. The way you're doing it, if someone tries to steal the car, all they have to do is jump across the starter terminals with a screwdriver and it's still going to start.

Ok, thanks guys. I may have to do that instead. I did get the toggle/kill switch to work but I don't like how it looks splicing into the purple wire of the bundle. What ignition voltage wire should I be looking at to, splice into? something from the distributor I'm guessing?

The only problem with killing the ignition with a switch is that if the switch or the connection fails while you are traveling down the road you would lose power to the engine leading to no power steering, weak brakes. My perfered method is to use a Bosch 30 amp relay. Cut the starter wire in half crimp on insulated spade terminals and plug them into the relay.
Take the wire from key side and connect to terminal 87a then run a jumper from it to terminal 86. Connect terminal 30 to the starter side of started wire. Use terminal 85 as the trigger for the relay. It needs to see ground to activate the relay so just put a flip switch in the glove box or some other hidden spot. Btw terminal 87 is not used. If you wire it this way if your switch or any connections fail your car will not fail to start for you and leave you stranded.

I'm confused. I use 87A for the key side of the starter wire, and as a jumper to 86? Then use 85 as a ground? and terminal 30 as the starter side of the starter wire? Where do the wires of the toggle switch go to?

Put the switch between ground and 85 on the relay. When 85 on the relay sees ground the "starter kill" is engaged. When ground is not there the relay will not open.

Think of it like this when the relay is not activated 87a and 30 are connected. When it is active 87 and 30 are connected. 86 and 85 activate the relay.

So when there is ground on 85 and 86 sees 12v from the starter wire (key side) it send power to 87 which is connected to nothing = no start. Make sure you wrap up the relay in tape so nothing shorts out and makes it hard for theives to see.
