Here was my '88 SS with Hooker full length headers, 2.5" pipe, X-pipe, and Flowmaster Super 40s with 3" turndowns. I mostly use X-pipes for the sound.

If you dont like the 5.0 Mustang sound, an X-pipe isnt for you. The H-pipe will give a more raspy sound like your TA.

Just curious, which one offers better results(H or X)? With the little knowledge I have, it would seem that the H design would be better equalizing pressures from each bank without 'slamming' them all together (confusing the exhaust on which way to go) after it all comes together at the X think
Seems an H pipe would be alot easier to install as far as having room under the car too.

As far as results, it seems that the X-pipe is a little better. But, the increase you will see is nothing you will feel in my experience. In some cars and especially in trucks, the H-pipe may be easier to install. But in a SS, the X-pipes fit very well. In my opinion it comes down to sound. The X-pipe will just mellow it out completely.

When you say Mellow it out. Is that bad? I am looking for a nice rumble. Sort of loud.
Mine: Stock Monte 85 SS
Removing air pump and installing new stock manifolds and iceman crossmember.
New duel exhaust all the way back.

If you want the rumble use the H pipe.

You will still have a rumble with a X-pipe. The X-pipes tend to have a different sound in the mid to upper RPMs. To me, the H-pipe and X-pipe sound the same at idle and low RPMs. Loudness is the same as sound is mostly controlled by the mufflers.

Ok cool. I am still trying to figure out what mufflers to buy.
Any suggestions? I am thinking Flowmaster or Hooker.

of those two, the hooker aero chambers are better for performance.

I like the Flowmaster Super 40 series. The 5" case provides a deeper tone than any of the other Flowmasters. You're not going to feel any power difference between any similar mufflers especially with the stock 305. Basically its a sound preference.

Thanks. Just to be clear. I am not concerned with power really.
I am just running my stock engine. I want a nice loud rumble. It goes fast enough for me. I just drive it to get coffee, to get ice cream with the kids and some car shows.. LOL

Appreciate the comment! You can't go wrong with either an H-pipe or X-pipe. However, I do feel the X-pipe is better at scavenging the exhaust. So, if you are doing one or the other in a new exhaust, I will always recommend the X-pipe. The X-pipe also gives the exhaust a "Mustang sound" will all like.

So I appreciate the info guys. I am going to buy mufflers in the next few days. So basically if I want that nice rumble I am going with an H pipe. Now I am having the whole exhaust made from my stock mainifolds back with the exception of me buying mufflers and giving them to Lou's. I am pretty sure I will go with the super 40's.

in laymans terms, scavenging is the exhaust sucking the air out the pipes, instead of it just flowing. Something like that. you want each exhaust port to put out the same amount of air all the way out the end.
