I keep going nowhere trying to get an alternator with a 5 groove serpentine pully. I ordered a Powermaster from Summit but it was a six groove setup. Everything around 100 amp is V belt! The crank pulley is 5 groove which goes without saying!
What am I missing. I can't be that STOOPID!!

Take the pully off of yours and put it on the one you just ordered.....problem solved.

Mine doesn't have the cooling fins and is nasty rusty. Nice new Chromed Powermaster , it kinda ruins the whole look.

AFAIK, there are no aftermarket sources for the stock style, serp alt pulley our cars use. You will have to reuse the original one. Just clean it up & give it a coat of paint, or send it our for powder coat or chrome plating.

Thanks, had to figure. What a cluster****. Does anyone make a replacement water pump pulley so you can use a V-belt alternator? Do different years of the SS come without this bastardized setup so I could maybe switch out?

thanks!

Just use the 6 groove one. No one will know the difference in it.

I'd be worried about the belt walking, causing misalignment & possibly coming off.

I think I'll try March. Does anyone know how long GM used this scheisse pseudo serpentine system?

My 84ss had vbelts only. I kept both the water pump pully and the crank pully for the vbelt-only setup if you are interested. Both pcs are in great shape

I am running the CS alternator with 6 groove pulley on my 1987, and as long as the belt is tightened good you should have no problems with the belt slipping.

I am running mine this way. I have a 6 rib alt pulley and a 5 rib crank pulley cause I couldn't find the alt one to match. I have been this way for years and even at the track it never walked on me or slip at all. The great thing about it being grooved is that they stay in place and never walk. This certainly applies to a system that is in complete alignment also.

I would be cautious about chromed alternators-they soak up a lot of heat...this is the main reason alternator cases are aluminum-they dissipate heat-you are likely gonna fry it out in a couple years if it sees a lot of street driving.

That is a good point and a reason I had to get the 120 amp ebay one in all natural aluminum.5 rib, available on power coated colors, chrome and natural, its just they seem to only advertise the chrome ones and have those available in the detail list.

Yep-go for the aluminum ones...it'll last ya a lot longer. If it does go out on ya-there is at least one option for ya I can recall off the top of my head-1988 Olds Firenza had a 105 amp alternator in a 5.25" case that is a direct bolt on for the stock alternator using the same mounting locations. At least that can be obtained from any auto parts store. To my knowledge, it's the only 12 and 6 clocking alternator I could find as a stock replacement but high amp at the same time.

swap the pulley- it's not integral with the fan.. it's literally a 30 second job if you have access to an impact wrench..

the flat 5 groove alternator belt setup is light years better than the v belt setup.. with the same brackets and only swapping pulleys and alternator belt, i was able to stop the alternator belt from flying off my Nova at over 7000 rpm and it never loosened up like some v belts like to do over time.
