My friend knows someone selling his 350 block no heads(bad) for 100 bucks. I guess this block is from a 1970 chevelle/corvette or nova not sure if that even matters. I don't have the casting numbers. Would this be worth picking up for $100? I still have the stock engine and would like to know from the community if this block will work with my heads/intake? or do I need the casting numbers to know for sure?

the good thing about GM is that everything fits grin before buying it remove the oil pan and check if its a 4 bolt mains which would make it a good candidate, but even if it were a 2 bolt mains and the bottom end is good i would buy it

Get someone who knows what's what to go with you and inspect it, or you'll just end up with an end table like on the English Top Gear. smile

is it just the block, or is it a short block with a crank, rods, pistons, and cam?
a 70 350 is probable the 300hp version, which means flat top pistons that would work awesome with a set of vortec heads..

.. X 4... I'd try and score a whole shortblock, not just an empty block... check as best you can for cracks in the bores and main webs... some sellers are totally honest, some total crooks, others somewhere in between...

I have not seen the block yet, but I do know it is everything minus the heads. thanks for all the advice so far. I will post again after I see it. I know that the heads are bad, that's why he is only asking $100.

OK the engine ID code # is V0814CGC.
VIN Code format is 11K104032.

I bought the block. Everything is there minus heads/intake.

I believe this is out of a 71 el camino. Correct me please if I am wrong.

Will my stock heads work with this block?

I show the engine being a 245HP "base" 1971 vintage with a factory 2 barrel carb and hydraulic cam. I would also guess its a 2 bolt main (respectively). Which heads are you looking to put on it?

Well I am open to the community suggestions on this project. If my heads would work with this block, I would just like to get them rebuilt and use them if that is a reasonable option. I would like to retain my CCC carb.

.. Isn't 245HP the new net rating for the '71 LT1 350?

.. Your 305 heads will work, you'll have '350-type' torque, but more like 305-type HP...

.. If it does have a big LT1 cam, I wouldn't use it with 305 heads... pull it and set it aside while numbering the lifters and save it... an inexpensive Summit #1102 204/214 cam/lifters/Z28 springs would be a much better match for 305 heads on a 350... for now...

Can you clarify what 'new net rating' means? How do I found out which cam is in there? Whether it is stock or aftermarket?

I dont know what that means Buzz. This engine specs as a base model 350 with a hydraulic cam and 2 barrel carb. Doesnt sound like an LT1 to me.

Measuring the lobe lift would be one way to check at least how much lift the cam has. Beyond that, a better alternative is to physically look at the cam for numbers.. and also to make sure it isnt damaged in any way. Mystery engines can work out good or be a nightmare.

.. I guess the '70 360 GrossHP LT1's only dropped to about 330 HP in '71 with the compression ratio drop and eventually to about 290(?) NetHP with the new rating system starting in 1972(?)... and then replaced with L82's...

.. Is there a casting number on that block on driver's side back next to where a distributor would be...?

.. Cam may have a brand name on the end of it... it's most likely a GM/Chevy 196/202 degrees intake/exhaust duration at .050" lift, .390"/.410" max valve lift... Chevy put that cam in most base to mid level 327" & 350" and all 400" engines... the lift can be determined by measuring with a machinist's micrometer or caliper the cam lobe max diameter, minus the base circle diameter to get the lift at the cam lobe, then multiply that by the 1.5 rocker arm ratio to get the valve lift... which is the lift (valve opening) number most commonly specified...

Isn't that the same # as posted earlier? Or are you looking for another #?

The casting number is 3970010. This is stamped on the rear drivers side of the block.

I thought those were only if there was a .020 stamped on the side of the block?

Well those numbers were present on the face of the block 010 over 020. And BTW, it is a 2 bolt main

OK I have this desirable 350 block on a stand, now what? Our 86 still has the 305. This is all new to me and I am definitely looking forward to this experience. From this thread, I know that I can use my 305 heads and probably want to upgrade the cam to what Buzz recommends. This is only a street car. I already have the new headers/dual exhaust installed.

What do you guys recommend I do to this block first?

You said the heads from this block were bad? What was wrong with them? What caused the problem? Hopefully nothing that originated in the bottom end.
