there is a brace that goes across driveshaft tunnel under the car a few inches behind the trans crossmember. It's in the way of me mounting my mufflers. Anybody know what it's for?

Its for the drive shaft, not really a brace, I'm sure its if the shaft ever comes loose (u-joint failure) that it would keep the driveshaft off the ground.

if you break a u joint with any sort of power behind it, that little piece of stamped steel won't even slow the driveshaft down.. i think it's just another brace they put in there to try to find an extra little bit of body stiffness.

86 MC SS- rough, but fixable. looks like something Dale Sr might have driven back to the transport after a race at Bristol.

Regardless of what the factory strap is actually used for, I consider any type of drive-shaft safety loop a necessity. If the strap is in the way, reroute the exhaust.
