hi my name is matt. i just found this forum. turned 16 and this is my first car/monte. always loved the cars growing up and when i could buy my first car this is what i got. its an 87 and when we bought it we didnt think it was too bad... i looked closer underneith and saw a huge hole. i ripped up the carpet to find this mess. we bought brand new goodmark pans but the rust is all the way around the rockers. even the drivers side firewall mount is literally gone. i highly doubt it but if anyone could tell me how i could purchase an all new rocker and front mount our how to properly rebuild it that would be great thanks. heres some pics

passengers side

drivers..can see the frame

someone has already replaced the rear driverside once but looks like sh--

I would first start by taking yours and replacing what you can with those new pans. Then talk to somebody like Tony (tonys57chevy) or mikesmontes about the parts you are looking for after that. Shhetmetal can be replaced, teh key is to make sure you replace it all, and keep looking for more in case. After all that, get some POR 15, cover it all real good, and it should be fine for a long long time

I remember the days that cars were lowered and trucks were lifted

I have never seen floor boards that bad in a non-t-top car... shakehead

It's sad to see that kinda of rust and like another member said it looks like the car was submerged in water for 10 years.

Seriously, you're more then likely will need to do a fram-off restore in order to do the sheet metal work correctly on the side frame rails.

It can be done with out lifting the body, but it would more then likely be just a hack job.

Also with that kinda of rust did you inspect the frame for rot too?

I don't want to be the one to break it to you buy you would be better off picking up another car and parting this one out. Repairs like that will cost you much more than just replacing the car. Good trick would be to find a v6 car in good shape and swap all the SS parts onto it.

TES Headers - done !
new cat-back exhaust - done !
5.7 swap - done !
3.73 posi rear - done !
blazer front brakes - done !
LS1 Rear Brakes - done!
transmission - rebuilt !
now looking for a replacement rear

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Ive heard of that por 15 stuff on here when i searched. The one thing i really dont get with my monte is that the rest of the body is semi decesnt. The frame is rock solid throughout the car. Its only alittle scaley around the rear wheelwells that were just going to fix with some new sheetmetal and bondo. As i said its my first car and its definitly not going to be perfect. Just enough to last me alittle while. We might try and build new rockers with some sheetmetal and a brake. Thanks to all for the help/advice on where to get parts. We're trying to get this thing as cheaply fixed as we can so i really dont know about all new parts.

Anyone going to carlise? We might go for the first time this year and is there any good g-body parts there?

84montesSS.. Yes its bad and i will prob do most of the welding myself. we have a welding class at my school. other than that just repaint and maybe throw a 350 in later down the road

There must be something with ny soil...they rust from the bottom up and the outside and frame is beautiful. We looked at 3 others before we bought this one.

I really dont know if we could find a cheap unrusted monte up here in ny for parts

I will get more pics. what do you guys want to see?

welding class?!?! ss at 16?!?! u lucky mofo, i wasnt allowed to get my license til i was 18 & when i finally did, i IMMEDIATELY bought my own car (my money) but as luck has it, the high school i went to with the body shop said i couldnt be there no more...GO FIGURE!!!!(no child left behind my butt, they tried to nicely make me drop out but i had determination to not drop out like 90% of my potnas) so now after all those years of having perfect body shops from many different schools (3 dif schools with them good shop lifts, tools of all kinds ,etc), OONNLLYY when i finally get my license & a car is when i get forcefully shipped to a school without; i repeat WITHOUT an auto class period/at all (had 2 enroll myself bc da school system gave me da eff-u symbol; it took 3 tries to get in this school)...talk about mudcrad at its finest...so my lesson to you is use ur class wisely while you can or be like me & have no resources & being forced to go to auto zone for every little problem/repair (big problems/repairs get the eyebrow raise & the middle finger). i woulda loved to have been pampered with those shop lifts at school instead of having to cheap floor jack up the car for a simple brake change while also risking getting mushed...hell now that i remember, i stripped a wheel cylinder screw because i aint have the right tools; long story short, a 3 dollar tool cuda save me that 140 dollar repair

use resources wisely grasshopper

Looks like that car had some really bad rain leaks in it. The water will pool under the carpet and the underpadding will get soaked and never dry out. The wet underpadding will then rot out floorpans quickly, it is like having a sponge between the floor and carpet.

Ouch, thats looks pretty bad. It all comes down to time and money. My old 87 GP rotted out above the cats heatshield and on the drivers floor. Had some patches welded in.

Well take your time and you will have a car to be proud of. I just replaced my floor and front body mounts see MY SS AND NOW IT FINALLY BEGINS. I will be going to the ENGLISHTOWN SWAP MEET on NJ next weekend there is a lot of venders with new parts as well as venders with old parts you never know what your going to find. My suggestion is go over the whole car and create a need list and a want list. then create a budget and plan on spending about 150% of the budget. Dont get discouraged as these are great cars. MARK

Mike i dont think you have them but i need the entire rocker...the inside and the top where the body by fisher peice screws on.

It most likely did have really bad leaks. were going to replace all the weather stripping.

Me and my Father will be starting on the pans today. Will take some pics.

matt

Todays work we took the doors off to get around the shop easier and started to cut out the middle suport which was salvagable. Man that was a pain furious and by any means this will not be a show car. We are just getting it drivable but trying to do it right. matt

if it was me brace the doors 1st weld in a x brace from front of doorjam to back of door jam. repace the rockers 1st so when putting in the pans you have good medal to weld too.
heres a post i made awhile back .

I don't know the extent of the rust on your car but in order to do a solid repair you're going to find that you will have to remove metal about an inch or two beyond where it is rusty. Normally where you see the rust and holes, the metal is bad underneath the paint.

It's best, if you have the room, to completely remove the seats, carpet and the lower interior plastic (kick panels and sill moldings) If you can, unbolt the seatbelts as well, but most times those bolts just don't wan't move so you may have to cut the carpet around them.

With a good view of the floor you can inspect the frame inside the car. It's very important that the framing is in good shape. If the rust is right into the framing in these areas, it's quite possible the whole car's body is distorted. You should be able to tell by the way the doors close and line up.

Sounds like loads of work but believe me it's better to do all that, then patch it up from the outside only to find the frame inside is shot down the road. When doing this kind of work this stage is sometimes causes me to change it all on the car.

The way I look at it, if the framing is still good inside and out, any car is repairable The framing also gives you something to weld to.

When I patched floors, on one car driver's side floorpan right up underneath the pedals was bad. I got my saws-all out
( sameone i use to cut up car i use to fix them lol ) and began to cut all the bad stuff out. I found I had to go about an inch beyound the rust all around. If your car is bad around this area and the otherside be sure to inspect where the K-frame joins to the frame rails underneath and look at the rear of the frame rails to see they are still solidly attached. When you start cutting out the rust make sure you are careful not to cut something on the other side too!! I allmost went through a brake line on one car.

I used metal from the roof of an old car that I had saved before I scrapped it.I also have use pans out of parts cars. But it is best to buy a new or rust free pan to put in. This metal is normally of heavier guage and works well for this kind of job. I used a little 110volt mig welder to do my floors, its the best tool you could invest in believe me, but I'm sure you could torch weld the floors in too.I just don`t like to do it that way.

As for heat distortion, when you weld in the patch weld them in spots. I spotted every inch on mine and never warped anything. The cars are put together with spot welding anyway. You just have to make sure you seal both sides of the repair when you are done. Doing it this way, makes forming the floorpan easier too. You can use the heat from your previous weld to pound and shape the next spot. Be sure to cut your patches bigger then the spot you want to fix as well. Don't be afraid to overlap in areas either.

If you do have to replace the floorpan metal running over the two main frame rails.. be sure to weld the patch to the flange on the rails too. The floor pan does help stiffen the chassis.

I don't like saying this to anybody, but if the framing is in really bad shape, rob what you can in parts and get another car. This was done on a 40 chevy.
