I bought a brand new starter and its making the clicking noise. the starter wont even turn over. the battery is good as i have tested it in another car. why would a brand new starter not start and make the clicking noise?

.. Occassionally a new or rebuilt starter is also bad...

.. If your old starter did the same thing as the new one, then you prolly have a wiring problem... most likely a dirty/corroded battery clamp/connection...

.. turn on the headlights and try the starter, the headlights should dim some, but not go completely dark... if the headlights go dark, you're losing power somewhere along the line...

did the starter come happen to come from O'Reilly/Kragen auto parts?
it happens pretty regularly with their Ultima starter.
i've probably replaced my starter under warranty 3 times in the last 5~6 years. every time i go thru 3~4 starters before i get a good one.
the last time it was late in the day and they didn't have another starter in stock, the "new reman" was worse than what i took off.
i still have that one on my car, sometimes it take 15~20 tries before it works.

Definite connection problem between battery and starter, most likely on the ground side. Remove the ground cable from the alternator bracket and bolt it directly to front of the head or block
Buy a pair of universal battery clamps and redo the cables to be sure that it has a good connection. Be sure there is a body ground running from the negative terminal to the body, it should be a black wire much smaller than the battery cable.

I remember when i had that problem. it was a loose battery cable that i didnt tighten. check your cables. if it were an almost dead battery, it would slowly turn over when turning the ignition. if the cables are good, replace the starter.

.. Some rebuilders of low priced starters don't cut down the nylon between the copper commutator blocks... I think they want you to bring it back and buy a higher priced starter... I just cut down the nylon with a broken hacksaw blade and keep it...

u got it.. i bet he needs to clean the battery posts and cables to battery with a wire brush. get it nice and shiny and tighten down good. lights work, horn etc. but when the starter load comes in its dead because of bad connection.

Try moving the - cable to one of the starter's mounting bolts.

Did the starter come with a new solenoid or are you reusing the old one? If it's new try jumping from the battery post on the starter to the solenoid wire and it should start. If it starts you have cable or other wiring problems.

I would also check your grounds from battery to engine and engine to frame. I had a similar problem with my '84 SS. The Ground cable that went from the battery to the engine looked like it was a good connection, but after some digging I found that there was paint underneath the connection. After a good scraping and cleaning, it hasn't failed me since.

yup, the connection between the clamp and the cable..
Since the solenoid is clicking the circuit is getting voltage but not enough current to turn the starter motor.

Where is the negative cable from battery attached to the engine?
Have you replaced the battery clamps on both cables and ensured there is good connection?
Are you sure the battery has enough charge?

I bought a reman starter from autozone that came with the new solenoid. the negative battery cables are attached to the top of the alternator bracket and also to the fender. ive changed the side post bolt, but i havent changed the negative post yet(will do tomorrow). the battery has good charge because it started my other mc.

Most starters won’t do a thing unless there’s at least 10 volts available from the battery
