i have a 305 in my 79.. runs good, no bucking, or back firing, when the engine comes down to idle i can here maybe one lifter tapping on the pass side rear.. i havent adjusted it yet-- dead batt. lol.. i think since the engine runs so good and no back firing it just needs a lil tighting. has anyone had this problem and by adjusting the rocker fixed the prob. or do yall think the lifter is just bad? thanks

Sounds like it just needs a little valve adjustment.

If it's valve adjustment, then somthing is wrong, because they should not need periodic adjustment (hyd lifters), make sure your not hearing an exhaust leak.
How is the oil pressure? Can you see oil moving on the floor of the cyl. head when it is running and you remove the filler cap? You should see a flowing river there when it is warmed up.
How many miles are on the engine? If it is indeed a lifter that has lost pre-load, you will need to figure out why that has happend.

Thats not always true. They do need adjusting as the lifter spring wears. They require lash to be put on them as the oil will only make up so much space, that is why they require an inital setting of 1/2 -3/4 turn of prelaod when new.

well the previous owner said the car sat for some 10+ years.. maybe a dry start or something caused this. idk.. i do see oil everywhere.. i havent started the car with valve covers off yet. i have the covers off now and the valves look "pretty clean" for a 79.. and yes its a lifter or valve making the noise. (broomstick) trick. lol.. but it idles so good and under load no bacj firing..

get one of those stethoscopes to make sure its a lifter, had the same thing happen and the noise would go away when adjusting the lifter and made me believe it was a bad lifter so i changed it out and noise was still there, turned out to be an exhaust leak due to the header bolts loosening blush

.. I would drive it till it's warmed up good and hot and then let it cool enough to change the oil and filter... and then drive it for a month or so and see if it frees up and goes away on it's own... after getting a good warm up several times... and engine heat driving the moisture and condensation out of the engine and melting the sludge...

.. If not, then adjust it...

.. If after adjusting it, it soon starts ticking again after a few days, then prolly either you need a new lifter and/or the cam lobe is going bad ("wiping out") and you need a new cam and lifters...

.. The bottom of the lifter should appear flat... actually slightly bowed out, but that is hard to see... if the bottom of the lifter is dished in, then the cam/cam lobe is also damaged... you could put a new lifter in and get some more use out of the car, but you really need a new cam and lifters as soon as practical...

.. A Summit mild performance cam and lifters may cost less or the same as a stock cam and lifters from GM...

My guess is you have a flat cam. GM had a lot of trouble with soft metal in camshafts from that era.

.. LOL! Over the past 50 years I've heard that comment about every era... so I'm thinking mosttimes you get a good cam... sometimes you don't... of course, the advent of all new cars having roller cams and the removal of high pressure lubricants for flat tappet cams from modern engine oils has caused a whole new set of concerns... plus, if an engine ever runs low on oil, is overrevved extensively, has too weak valve springs, has other parts of the engine disintegrate into the oil, or is abused before it comes up to proper operating temperature, that can also damage cams... another problem is some aftermarket performance cam companies were selling imported cams and lifters made of inferior materials for a while... I hope that has stopped...

.. Check that the distributor cap is fully down and seated properly and the hold down 'screws' are in the proper lock down position... I've seen that make a rotor tapping sound...

.. Maybe you'll luck out and the rocker arm nut just came loose a little bit... hope so...

Really? adjusting the rockers can quiet up a lifter tap!?I installed a new cam and lifters in my car, broke it in,then had the valve adjustment done, the next day i hear a very subtle tapping, thats for sure not the rockers. What did you do?tighten them up a bit or loosen them.

this is how it was done on my car, kinda messy. i was told later they make something to block the oil. But you can clearly hear the difference in the noise the tapping makes when u adjust it.
