I have an emissions delete car and was wondering if I still need to have the charcoal canister and associated hoses for my car to run correctly?

My 84 SS had all of the emissions off the car but kept the canister. I could smell gas all of the time because it was clogged up. I put a new one in and it was fine after that.

Keep the cannister, you will be doing yourself good, and every one else too for that matter. If you remove it and vent the float bowl to the atmosphere, you will end up smelling fuel vapors often.

I think you can get them at autozone. Most places have them listed as "vapor canister".

They are a good thing to have, why vent gas vapors that you paid for when you can use them.

How does the canister get plumbed if everything else is missing? Without the appropriate vacuum lines and valve, how does it work?

Here is an older post:

http://www.montecarloss.com/community/ub...4058#Post614058

I have heard of people getting a tank vent cap, venting with a filter just above the tank, venting at the charcoal canister, and plumbing to the carb without the ECM (older style?). I am not sure how to plumb to the carb without the ECM.

It would be helpful if someone has an older system that is not controlled by the ECM and could comment on that setup.

Only 87 and up MCs have a ECM controlled canister, pre 87s the ECM does not control the canister but they use a TVS to keep it off untill the engine is warm.

Can you describe the TVS system in detail? Does anyone have a schematic of it?

perhaps a different question. Is the TVS system essentially the same as the ECM system, except that the thermal switch replaces the ECM switch? If so, I would expect the amount of tubes and entanglements to be similar to those on the '87 and '88...True?

Instead of a purge solenoid there is a TVS but the hose routing is different.

Thanks Will,

You are the man in the know about the pollution control stuff.

Essentially, it looks about as complicated as the 87/88 set-up.

Did the TVS hook into a radiator hose or the block somehow?

The TVS screws into the the intake manifold on the water passage. The 87 setup seems to use a lot more check valves than the pre 87s.

Buickrunner,
Check out the diagram I made many years ago, I copied my badly worn one from my car, I used the "PAINT" program found on my computer. I printed it out on sticky back paper and put it on my fan shroud. The only thing I don't have on it is the bar code.
If any one want's it, save it, and print in landscape, it's very close to the origanal in size, enjoy!

For my LS1 swap I plan on running a vented cap and breather above the tank. Thats what a few of the malibu guys have done. Dont know if you'll still smell vapors though

FWIW, on mine I ran the vent hose to a cone-type valve cover filter and ran it into the left front fender area. I can't smell any fumes at all.
