a simple way to tell if your camshaft is too big or too small for the installed CR is to use a compression gauge and measure cylinder pressure. if the pressure is low around 140psi then the cam is too big, if the pressure is too high around 200psi then the cam is too small...hth

Is the cam the wrong size or are you just closing the intake valve at the wrong time?

I should've been more specific, what i'm referring to is the duration..

so if i went a little bigger in the cam department, like one size up in the voodoo from where im at now, would that help my detonation problem? or would my cylinder pressures be to low then?

the key is to keep the cylinder pressure up w/o detonation, other than making sure the timing curve is dialed in like we discussed earlier it comes down to the quench area, chances are your engine has more than .060" piston/head clearance and is more susceptible to detonation because of the excessive quench.. sure we could add more duration which would lower the cylinder pressures aka dynamic CR aka running compression.. everythings a compromise when the engine is not properly designed and built.. so the end result of adding a larger cam in your case is decreased performance, but before we change the cam let's do everything we can to minimize the detonation with your current combination, an excellent article discussing these techniques is outlined here: http://popularhotrodding.automotive.com/45359/0605phr-pump-gas-secrets/index.html
