Stock 84SS with 305 and CCC system. Under full throttle it pulles well up to about 4000 rpm's and then acts like it is restricted. If I back off a little it will pull up to 4000 rpm's again and quits pulling. No matter what gear it is in? Havent messed with it yet. It also sometimes at light crusing speeds if you give it a little gas will stumble, like to speed up a little to go over a hill/pass a slower car. Where you just give it a little, it only does this every now and then. Any help on what to check out first.

fuel filter, float level, fuel pump..etc, check for sufficient volume and pressure.. and/or check the converter for a restriction... and/or check the total advance, the module could be in limp-home mode giving the engine limited ignition advance.. and/or check the timing chain for excessive slop... that should get you off to a good start diagnosing the problem

George, Thanks,I did change the ingition module, thinking that was the issue, still have same issue. I bet it is the timing chain with excessive slop. Just trying to make it last until the new motor goes in. Guess it is time to get serious about getting it installed. The cat will get gutted after the new cat back exaust gets installed also. But will check the fuel system before I change out the new motor. Dont need to take those issues to the new engine.

I doubt the chain is doing that. Like was said, fuel system or spark problems under load.

It might be the timing chain, it has over 3,000,000 miles on it and has not been changed! Will get it a new set of plug wires and plugs and check the fuel pressure, filter and see what happens.

Sounds like reversion due to a really streached chain and/or jumping time, you're on the right track with that. See if it spits a cloud of gas out of the carb at full throttle that should tell you the answer. The other issue sounds carb related, i worked that one out of mine by setting the idle mixture controls and air bleed, then the mixture solenoid to factory specs.

Well after the motor change, the car was still doing the shutting down at around 3500-4000 rpm's. Checked all the plugs, wires, ingition box and all was well. Finally checked the fuel filter today, Guess what the $2 part fixed her right up. There was some crud in the filter and the filter housing. Got it all cleaned out and a new filter and all is well. Guess I got some crud in the gas or something. All is well. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Don't feel bad... my car was doing the same thing last summer and I thought my clutch was slipping (naturally assume recent work caused the problem)... and I finally remembered I hadn't change the fuel filter in a while. It was so crudded up, I was surprised anything could get through. It's nice when the problem is simple, unfortunately though we sometimes overlook those simple thing! LOL
