Who cares?
I recently finished reading the book _Chevrolet SS_ by Robert Genat. I discovered some very interesting tidbits about Chevrolet and the SSs...

...Chevrolet GM Bunkie Knudgen's personal 1963 car supplied the pattern for the 1964 Chevrolet Impala SS special interior.

...The only Chevrolet Chevelle model in 1967 that featured a Big Block engine, without SS trim, was the Chevrolet El Camino.

...The March 1984 issue of Hot Rod magazine named the 1984 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS as "Sleeper Of The Year".

...General Motors refused to sell the tooling for the 1996 Chevrolet Caprice to Michigan-based RCI Inc., which outfits police cars, that wanted to continue producing the popular car at a Canadian factory.

...In 1970, Motor Trend magazine tested a 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS454, along with a 1970 Ford Thunderbird and a 1970 Pontiac Grand Prix. The MC bested the other 2 vehicles in terms of performance, running 0-60 in 7.0 seconds and the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds at 92 miles per hour.

...The model selection for the 1961 Chevrolet Impala included a 2-door sedan, which was a 1-time offering, not previously available nor ever again produced.

...The name for the Chevrolet Caprice was coined by Bob Lund (Chevrolet's General Sales Manager) after a classy restaurant he frequented in New York City.

...The 1962 Chevy II was awarded Car Life magazine's Engineering Excellence Award.

...The inspiration of the shape of the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro came from a show car named "Super Nova" that had been on display at the 1964 New York Auto Show.

Very intersting, is the book mostly like that with neat little facts about each year? OR otherwise
I think the little "useless" facts are the best we will remember them forever and be so thrilled if we ever get use them in conversation, but lose car keys at least once a week

Cool info!

Names: Louis Chevrolet / William C. Durant

Plus, it's too bad the Chevette name went to such a weako car... it could've been the best Chevy name of them all!

Scott - '85 SS, t-tops, grey bucket/console, all power, posi, and currently in midst of frame-off rebuild.

Eh...sorta both. It is written like a book, so you have to read to actually spot the "neat little facts" ... if that makes any sense....

*raises eyebrow*

That's a new one on me ... don't remember reading that in _Chevrolet SS_. However, the code name for the 1967 Camaro was "Panther", according to the book....

GM did make one off or odd ball cars as the workers called them in the 70`s an 80`s that stayed within the walls of GM. I had a VHS tape i bought back in the 90`s it showed a bunch of these cars i like the name proto type better then odd ball here were a few that they showed still in a GM garage , V8 caddy cimorion convertible, 2 chevette`s that had 2 motors in each car 1 car has a V8 transverse in the front and one in the trunk the other had twin V6`s in it, then they had a chevette with a buick V6 turbo front wheeldrive the badge on the side of the car i remembr was GxS , they built 2 SS Pickups with nothstar motors and 200R4 TRANS and 373 posi rear one had a 411 rear, Buick Ragettea with a GN motor in it same turo hump in the hood as the Gn, as for the cars of the 70`s they had built a Olds Vistercruiser wagon with 442 hood and trim it had a big block and 4 speed in it.72 caddy sport wagon as they called it on the tape . it was a 72 caddy station wagon bucket seatsfront an rear center console went to the rear seats 4 speed posi rear this car was silver but they never showed or talked about the motor it had a flat hood but had the flap that opens on a 70 chevelle ss hood. a 75 corvette with a stright 6 in it oh boy happy they did not make that one..71 C20 van with a big block in it they called it super v..i have to see where i ut this tape there were a ton more .

ah hah! took forever seeing how my sources that i cited in my report were less than accurate. but here is the web site talking about the chapparal camaro. I personally think that gm would sell alot more cars if they either produced exact cars like the concepts, or just put a body body panels on new style frames, such as 69 camaro etc, instead of having to reinvent the wheel.

"This pre-release car bears "Chaparral" name."

I know that in 63, you couldn't get a Nova with a V8 in it, including the SS. It only came with an inline 6. I think its the only non-V8 SS before the new Monte Carlos

The name 'El Camino' translates to 'The Road'.

The Pontiac 'GTO' name was copyied from Ferrari.

'The Judge' is from the show "Laugh-In".

Originally, the 'Boss' 302 mustang was supposed to be called something like the 'XK2'(?)
When Larry shinoda took over the project, he is quoted as saying, he insisted they change the name to 'The Boss' and add stripes and the wing etc. to compete with cars and names like 'The Judge', 'Super Bee' etc.
